Trouble flashing drive

Post by Chaos6616 »

Hello, I am trying to use makemkv with a LG BU40N

I have installed makemkv on fedora linux, and all appears well. The trial key is currently outdated, and the order page is dead, so Im using faketime to get around the registration check. I've added my user to cdrom, and am using waypipe as the mediaserver has no displays.

Running makemkv (with: faketime 'last fortnight' makemkv) my drive appears to be a typical OEM drive

However, attempting to dump the drive's firmware just hangs forever (well, atleast several hours):

I cant figure out what Im doing wrong

Try using an older version of MakeMKV.

Im now using 1.17.6. I think I've flashed the drive properly, but I cant do any rips.

I dumped the firmware before starting, and I dont think my drive was encrypted, the firmware is dump_user_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_FR07_211801221536_808HS003853.tar, and didnt appear on the list

but when I try to rip anything, it tells me that the disk is using a newer version of AACS, even though the disk in question is Cars2 from 2011 (the oldest disk I could find, lol). So, I tried to setup the public KEYDB.cfg as decribed here, I still get a link to report the AACS version, but instead of the tgz there are a lot of errors like "The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/01019.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 282624, attempting to work around" and eventually "Too many AV synchronization issues in file '/BDMV/STREAM/01019.m2ts' (title #-) , future messages will be printed only to log file" and hangs.

Code: Select all

The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/01019.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 282624, attempting to work around
Messages like that ^ indicate that the drive is having trouble reading the disc correctly. The standard advice is to clean the disc and try again.

Bummer, I tried cleaning the lens and the disks, but that didnt seem to have an effect. I also bought some new blurays, and get the same messages.
The estimated time remaining just keeps increasing in the GUI, lol

Is it safe to assume the drive is just defective then?

After flashing you drive with the old version of makemkv, did you go back to the newest version? That should fix the AACS issue of the version on disc being newer than in makemkv. Can't guarantee it will fix the other issue of invalid or corrupt m2ts file, though.

Ok, so Ive made some amounts of progress, maybe.
I started with just trying windows, and got the same invalid offset errors. Assumed hardware failure, and bought a new drive (also bu40n). I tried the windows GUI firmware flasher instead of linux/makemkv1.17.6 and now both drives rip disks under windows as expected. Reboot back into linux, installed makemkv 1.18.1 over 1.17.6, deleted KEYDB.cfg, and attempted to open disk. All disks now 'use newer AACS please let us know...'

So at this point I was pretty sure I had majorly eff'd my linux install. Reinstalled and tried 1.18.1 again. Here's the log (I successfully ripped this disk under windows):

Adding the KEYDB.cfg still gives 'm2ts is corrupt or invalid' errors while trying to open the disk (and isnt even necessary for any of my disks on windows)
Didnt mess with firmwares or anything, and booting back into windows2go and can rip the disk without issues. Im now using almalinux10, but that shouldnt really matter tho.

Another thing Ive noticed: In linux the drive doesnt respond to the eject button with a disk inserted. Im pretty sure the drive isnt mounted, ejects immedeatly with `eject /dev/sr0`, and the button behaves normally in windows. I dont know if this is relevant/means anything.
Also the windows application is 32bit, should my linux build be 32 bit?

I flashed DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin with the GUI flasher on windows

Symptoms very similar to this post, it seems to take longer to get up to 6.0X while ripping under windows. However, linux rips never work, always end with 'volume key is unknown'. The drive's eject button does seem to be working now.

Here's the drive info:

Do you have _private_data.tar in /home/mike/.MakeMKV/ ? I presume you do since I see these lines in the log:

Downloading latest SDF to /home/mike/.MakeMKV ...

Downloading latest HK to /home/mike/.MakeMKV ...

Out of curiosity, what's inside of it?

Folks in this thread: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=37670 are all over the place. Some can't make any version beyond 1.17.7 work on their linux installs, no matter what they do. Other's have no problem with the latest. Some have said they needed a _private_data.tar from an older install to get their current install to work. Some even claim they have to load a DVD first before MakeMKV will rip a blu-ray.

The top portion of your MakeMKV log looks fairly normal to me (except that it can't figure out AACS v28). Unfortunately, we don't have a way to figure out what those debug codes reference.

Hello,
Regarding the non functioning eject button of your drive in Linux :
This is normal behavior. Once a disc is inserted, the Udev rules scan the disc and try either to mount it (data) or display an icon somewhere on your desktop. Once this icon is displayed, the disc is "locked" and, thus, the eject button on the drive is disabled.
So you either have to submit the eject command on a terminal or use the right click on the disc icon and select eject.
This behavior is important because you may physically eject a disc which is actually mounted in the Linux filesystem tree somewhere.

Also, when an optical disc is inserted/used, some processes permanently monitor the device containing it. So maybe this is interfering with MakeMkv... And this could be one of the causes of your failed backup.
Hardware is fine, as it works perfectly on the same hardware but different OS
MakeMkv should be fine if you use the very same version on both OSes..
So look at what is accessing your drive when running makemkv. LSOF is your friend.
Just my 2¢

P.S. : Have you compiled MakeMkv yourself on your machine ? Because this could make a difference.

Alright, I think I've figured it out: the linux edition of MakeMKV constantly does license checks while reading the disk (Instead of once upon program launch)

Using timedatectl, turn off ntp, set time back to 2025-07-07, launch the program, disks rip (both on fw v1.0 and v1.03MK). Set ntp back on, and maybe during the next decryption event, it checks the license? If I set the time back to present while ripping a title, the title finishes saving but it fails to rip the next one. Setting back to the present after the program launches, but before opening the disk gives me pretty much the same symptoms I've been having

Again, setting the time back to July and keeping it there, v1.18.1 will rip disks just fine. (both standard bluray and UHD) Idk if the constant license checking is a bug, but it seems that alteast 1.17.5-1.18.1 have this behavior, I cant get anything older than 1.17.0 to build on my machine

Here is the tar -tf _private_data:

Code: Select all

tar -tf .MakeMKV.1.18.1.bak/_private_data.tar
hkd_0000005a.bin

I saved the builds/.MakeMKV's for all the versions I tried, and can upload them if necessary or desired
(fwiw all my tests on linux have been on build I made myself)

Should I leave the one drive at fw v1.0 or reflash v1.03MK?

I'd say leave it on v1.0 unless there's some reason to change it to 1.03. In my view, flashing as few times as possible is the best course of action.
