VLC plays a backup as if the backup were a disk. In other words, you still use "Open disc..." to play the backup.
Ok, that was probably a misunderstanding on my part.

If I select the directory with the movie files via “ Media => Open medium ”, the movie starts, but without menus. So I only see the start screen and cannot start the movie.

In my Panasonic Bluray player it still has a start menu with various options (start movie, subtitles etc.). How do I get this on the VLC - is it Makemkv or the VLC?

MakeMKV creates the backup, VLC plays the backup.

VLC's menu support also needs Java. Have you also installed Java? I would expect your Linux distribution to include packages for OpenJDK.

OK, I know that Makemkv creates the backup. The only question was whether an error occurred or whether I had a wrong setting.

As far as Java is concerned, the following is installed:
jdk-openjdk
jdk21-openjdk
jdk8-openjdk
jre8-openjdk
jre8-openjdk-headless

/usr/share/java/libbluray-awt-j2se-1.3.4.jar
/usr/share/java/libbluray-j2se-1.3.4.jar

or is there a setting in VLC that I have forgotten?

Hello!

I think the problem here is a misunderstanding.

I have used MakeMKV a lot, but my mission is to create .mkv files with just the movie and the right sound track and subtitles. Maybe you should check if MakeMKV really can make a 1 to 1 copy of a DVD or Blueray with the menu intact. I do not think it can, but I may be wrong. When I want a 1 to 1 copy of my DVD I generally use a payed version of CloneDVD7 Ultimate which you can find on their homepage

https://clonedvd.net/

I'm NOT endorsing them in any way, but I have found this software to be somewhat realiable to make DVD clones. I think they have a newer version that also can handle blueray, I have not tested that one.

Just my two cents.
