Pioneer BDR-212DBK is this Libre drive?

I'll admit I'm a little confused on the LibreDrive and KEYDB.cfg

for context , I purchased a pioneer BDR-212DBK recently, and I'm interested in using it to back up my DVD and Blu-ray collection.

at the time of purchase I did not realize that both DVD and Blu-ray used encryption/ drm, though I guess the protection has been cracked for dvd. my understanding is that Blu-ray uses some updated data on newer discs to prevent such cracking

my confusion lies in: what do I need to do to backup my collection? do I just need a KEYDB.cfg? how often do I update it? do I also need LibreDrive? or are the two used in concert? does my drive support LibreDrive? how do I check the version of firmware I have?

I am using Linux of that makes any difference. thank you for any help.

That drive will work fine as is for DVD/BD discs. It can also be flashed to enable UHD ripping if needed.

Official playback, no, never.

Unofficial UHD playback, sure. Just integrate VLC, MPC-HC or whatever player with MakeMKV as it is used as the on-the-fly decrypter.

Direct UHD disc playback is not recommended as it will wear out your drive quite a bit faster.

direct playback, do you mean unofficial playback? Is it the same with official UHD drives?

These days there is no official playback method as most people don't have an older Intel CPU with sgx and the old version of Powerdvd that still had UHD playback ability.

Cyberlink removed UHD playback from PowerDVD a few years ago now so there's no longer any official UHD playback software. So, the only way to play a UHD disc is using an unofficial player such as VLC, MPC-HC etc.

By direct disc playback, I mean exactly that. It is not recommended to play UHD discs at all. It is best to rip them and then play the ripped file(s).
