Test for those who are brave, BU40N-N 1.02

Post by mike admin » Sat Apr 27, 2019 10:23 pm

Guys, anyone have BU40N-N (classic USA version) with firmware 1.02 (or downgraded)? If you do have such drive and are familiar with flashing, could you please test the attached MK firmware? I do not have the drive...

Ok for anyone else

it does not currently work with LibreDrive
and disables DOSFlash

Update: downgrading works so if its like LG 1.04 or asus 3.10 the part you changed there to allow downgrades works.

Yes, this is expected behavior. This is a 3.10 clone for BU40, with re-enabled downgrade. All new BU40 drives now come with 1.03 . The LibreDrive support for this fw will be enabled in a few hours...

Mike thank you very much for releasing this firmware and supporting the drive I uploaded to you. I most appreciate your efforts and the performance of the drive is amazing. I look forward to supplying my customers with this model.

Note: Never flash a Desktop Drive with a Slim and Vice Versa.

And special thank to Andy in Kaohsiung, for full Tech Manual, you are the Man.

Thank you so much, Looking forward to seeing you. Mr L

What's the advantage of 1.03 over 1.02?

I tested the 1.03 and 1.00 firmwares on my external BU40N via USB but it does not work with UHD on QNAP container (Linux). LibreDrive information and disk information are displayed.
After start of decryption my 4k UHD Planet Earth II get error messages :

I tested another slim USB case - no success.
But decryption of normal Blurays and DVDs with makemkv 1.14.3 and the BU40N works fine on the QNAP.

Then I tested my external friendly drive BE16NU50 with the same UHD disk and it was decrypted with makemkv on QNAP. That external drive has its own USB controller.

The same BU40N box works on Win 10 as LibreDrive with makemkv 1.14.3! So it is the BU40N official UHD drive that does not work with the Linux container. SCSI error...
Has anyone tested the BU40N on Linux?

Likely - none. The 1.03 MK that we have now thanks to asmcom offers a somewhat cleaner downgrade path. So if you got a drive with 1.03 it might be beneficial to stay on 1.03MK, as it can be flashed without updating the bootloader. But I see zero reasons to switch from 1.02 to 1.03MK.

Second Time Around

Thank you Mike, for acknowledging and thanking me for uploading new version of BU40N drive firmware. It feels good when you make a contribution to the community and it is recognised

Maybe the person who said this version of firmware was already available, will be man enough to now, to say this was not the case.

Mike I appreciate your comments. I am nearly finished my testing. Will be in touch very soon.

Really is amazing what you and other people on this forum can do. There is a great team of people at the MakeMKV community.

I would like to thank Martymcnuts for his contribution in relation to his input and hard work involving the new modified the official ASUS ODD FW Flasher tool which allows people to flash or cross-flash their drive to a "UHD Friendly" firmware. It also makes my life easier too.

Hope everybody has a nice Weekend

man enough lol

i never said 1.03 for BU40N was available i said it possible to make that dive work with makemkv by downgrading similar to here: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=19250 i dont think you understand things very well

and the thread where we discussed this disappeared strange

i wish the person who copied my op was man enough to make there own, but while they were at it they should have just reuploaded my youtube video with there voice over it. would seem more legit. wait they already did that but with no voice over, but it got taken down lol

Thanks to mike we now have a alternative method to flashing firmware read more about it here: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18873
In some cirmsubstances when Cross-Flashing and doing be-spoke firmware changes I would use Dosflash too. MakeMKV now supports official UHD drives such as LG WH16NS60, LG BU40N and others, which is currently being built on. Hopefully Mike will be adding on some new drives shortly

Send me your drive or buy one from me directly. See below for supported models. When I flash your drive I can email your original firmware backup and the new edited firmware with file checksums or include a CD-Rom in return parcel with drive that contains new firmware. I will keep records of drive serial numbers and firmware changes in my database in the event you want to revert to original firmware for warranty reasons or other. You will have to pay for shipping both ways for flashing firmware service. I am located in the United Kingdom and cover worldwide. I can deal with international shipping no problem.

I do this as a hobby and have priced the drives as keen as possible. I donate profits once a year every Christmas and will post details and amount at this time.

All drives are brand new and tested for 4K compatibility after the firmware has been changed. This drive has been removed from original packaging and then connected to my PC to change the firmware to custom firmware which makes your drive able to read UHD discs. Drives are tested by inserting a 4K disc, and back in the original packaging. Other than that, it is absolutely brand new. I cannot guarantee you will be able to plug this in and play a 4K disc on your PC. It will, however, READ them. Therefore, with additional software (NOT included in this auction), this drive can provide you options to decrypt, rip, burn, copy, etc, giving the potential to change a 4K disc to a playable file format. Also, for 4K playback the PC needs to have a motherboard, monitor and hardware that supports 4K playback as the drive is one part of the jigsaw.

Ripping Black Hawn Down UHD right now on BU40N 1.03 on a Docker Container in unRAID, works Perfectly!

This firmware worked nicely on a Buffalo BRXL-PT6U2VB, enabling LibeDrive 8) and UHD  .

THANK YOU, Mike!
