how do i flash the drive so that i can rip 4k bluerays etc.?

Same happened for me. I got two 43888 drives. The first drive was a Pioneer, the second LG.
Make sure you thoroughly read the flashing guide (
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634) and, when you're finished, read it again.
Basically, you want Marty's GUI SDF tool (
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22896)... note that the links for the later versions do not work for me and I had to download and use the 'old original' SDFtool flasher.
Download the 'All you need firmware pack'
Unzip and put all files into the same folder
Plug in the drive, run the tool, select the BU40N firmware file, tick Enc and click on the relevant button to proceed.
Pretty straightforward.
