Thanks a ton. Looks like it was already live and could have found this but did not. Sorry about that... I ran searches and likely was just buried in more info that I am only beginning to grasp. As an IT person we cannot know all so love the help from the experts with experience.

I look forward to setting up my Plex server with ripped data... Wife will be shocked at all this...quite easy really 😃
Report back how it went. Glad to have you brought on the right path.

Use SDFToolFlasher. I think you are on Windows.

You don't copy the bin files. Download Marty's SDFtool Flasher and either "All you need software pack" to your windows computer. Unzip the pack if needed and then start the SDFtool Flasher program and select the firmware to write with that tool.

@Coopervid, would you mind pm'ing me with the necessary additional details to flash? I have the SDFtool flasher (v1.3.5), the ASUS_ODD_FW_Changer_(Modified) (24.08.2019), and the following firmware which I could flash (ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin). As you're aware, the SDFtool flasher doesn't work, as it's not the MT1959 platform.

Should I utilize the ASUS_ODD_FW_Changer? Wanted to make sure I didn't update it to one of the latest firmware's, and then not be able to go back.

Really would appreciate your insight. Cheers

Hi, I'm new around here so bear with my lack of knowledge please >,<

I bought a few years ago a Blu-Ray Writer from ASUS, model "BW-16D1X-U" and mainly used it to burn single layer BD-R discs or read DVDs (close to 100 discs done).
First thing I noticed about it is that it gets quite hot while burning the BD-R discs and reading DVDs, my guess would be the laser being too powerful. As such I'm worried in the long term if it will damage itself.
Until now my solution was to have a 20 min pause between burning discs, but I would really like to know if flashing the firmware to the lastest available or to a modified one would solve my issue here, because being able to burn discs head to head would speed up my workload by a ton.

From what I've read in this thread, I need to provide here the MakeMKV information of the drive:
Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1X-U
Revision: A104
Serial number: ***********
Firmware date: 2119-01-04 10:47
Bus encryption flags: 1F

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 0.A104W
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

Disc Information
Label: ***********
Timestamp: ***********
Data capacity: 19.56 Gb
Disc type: BD-R
Number of layers: 1
Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)

If I need to provide some other information about the drive I'll see to it as fast as I can.

I doubt a firmware update would make any difference with regards to writing discs. It's normal for a drive to warm up as it is doing a lot of work. Just leave the tray open for 5 mins after writing a disc before moving on to the next one. This gives you a few minutes to grab a cuppa or go to the loo!

Just so you know, this drive is flashable to enable libredrive and UHD support if you want it.
Cheers :D

I see, that's too bad. So I guess I have one more room heater now alongside my GPU ˙ ͜ʟ˙

And if it's flashable, having it support UHD would be a plus so I want that for sure anyway!
I've done a bit of reading in the "Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025" and "SDFtool Flasher" threads which were mentioned here so I don't start asking useless questions before informing myself on the situation and what I understood is that I can use that tool to flash the drive to version 3.10?

Also, I'm a bit confused considering the drives which is that version from are "BW-16D1H-U" and "BW-16D1H-U Pro", not from a newer "BW-16D1X-U" than mine.
That's my biggest worry, if it could brick the drive by loading firmware from another model.

Thanks for the fast reply by the way, I was expecting one til' the end of the week but not so soon >,<
