MakeMKV fails decrypting House of Dragon UHD 4k Complete Season 1 & 2 Boxset - Season 1 Disc #4

My friend and I each bought a 4 UHD Box Set with 8 UHD Blu-ray Discs containing the complete Season 1 and 2 of the TV series House of the Dragon from the same retail store in Australia. Each Season 1 and Season have 4 discs respectively (total 8 discs)

I was only able to backup 7 out of the 8 discs successfully. MakeMKV failed to backup the Season 1 Disc #4 and the error message was decryption key not available.

On the other hand, my friend who also bought the same boxset from the same store together with me was able to decrypt the said Season 1 Disc #4 using his DVDFab app.

May I know how I can address the MakeMKV decryption issue for the House of the Dragon Season 1 Disc #4 so that I can complete my backup before the defective return windows end? Thanks in advance for sharing your solution, if any.

Did MakeMKV generate a TGZ dump file for Disk 4? Because if so, you need to email it to svq@makemkv.com and then post its complete file name here.

You can also try downloading the latest KEYDB.cfg file, copying it into MakeMKV's data directory (i.e. where MakeMKV also writes its TGZ dump files) and restarting MakeMKV.

Hi MrPenguin, is the KEYDB.cfg an officially file provided by MakeMKV? Nowadays, I want to avoid downloading anything from the internet (unless from a confirm trusted site) to avoid being hacked and importing malicious malware into my PC?

Also, will MakeMKV auto-updating its decryption keys regularly just like other software (e.g. Norton McAfee) updates?

The public keydb is a community run project independent of MakeMKV. The main benefit it provides is much quicker support for UHD titles. The KEYDB.cfg file provided by the project is just a plain text file - you can open it up and read it with Notepad. There is no executable code or anything which could be malicious.

MakeMKV will automatically update its native support for titles. The KEYDB.cfg file is not automatically updated by MakeMKV, but there are tools such as FindVUK which can assist with updating the keydb file.

An additional note - The KEYDB.cfg file can be updated even if there is a block against MakeMKV's update site by your internet provider.

This happens, and there is nothing that the author can do to prevent it. There are ways around it (most of the time) listed on the forum, but not everyone wants to do them.

Either way (wait for MakeMKV to update or pull a copy of KEYDB.cfg) works, once one of them is updated for your particular disk.
