MP4 = no atmos nor dts-hd, no subtitle support at all and some dual-layer mp4 won't work or will freeze while every single dual-layer bluray folder or TS will work.

and you can have more than one movie on your HDD. you just have to separate them into folders and move the movie folder you want to watch in the root.

This is with X700, correct?

Well in my case my lgc1 doesnt support dts and my soundbar is a Jbl 5.1 so i guess the ac3 is enough for me, small room, and having just 1 file plus srt is more simple to me. I hate those white lantern style subtitles but nothing i can do.

The x700 have any specific configuration about image? i keep seeing difference between my internal tv player and the x700 with the same exactly image setting on the tv.

on the x700 i used output 4k (less freezing issues, but tried with auto too), 24p is in auto, movie convertion is in auto, color auto and of course hdr/dolby enabled.

Lucky i didnt found any mp4 dual layer not working on the x700, only the shining that freezes if you try to pause/stop but as now i can convert that in p8 the issue will be gone.
I dont know but most likely it's your internal C1 player that is incorrect because we compared a lot of devices and they are all identical brightness/color-wise: X700, Dune player, Firestick, Chromecast, UGOOS, Shield (only p5)...

sometimes i get 23 or 24 difference, even 29 frames difference.
maybe both sources are not exactly the same.
not true. I did this movie and the frame difference is the same from start to finish.
You're miscalculating or your sources are incorrectly muxed:
23.976 vs 23.976 (24000/1001)

EDIT:
you're using the newly 2021 remastered bluray right? not the old one from 2016 ?
I just checked at the start and the end of the movie and the frame difference is 24.

you're obviously doing something wrong or your sources have issues...
I just compared the FTG bluray with the FLUX mp4...
checked 5 different frames and always got the 24frame difference.

I don't really understand, normally setting the active area offsets to 0 (with "crop": true) allows for cropped video playback.
A limit to the "lift" is not necessary.

I think this only mentions that it's an issue for uncropped video. Does your video have black bars?

No, some don't have black bars.
I was just looking for maybe a way to play the appleTV p5 web-dl (no black bars) on the x700/oppo without having the raised black bars. Sounds like bluray players just can't play properly cropped DV content.

going from p5 cropped webdl to p8 bluray remux with black bars works, if that's what you think I was talking about.

This is confusing me. How do you have raised black bars when the content has no black bars?
Is it not 16:9?

Though if it has no black bars encoded in the video, and the Dolby documentation says that L5 metadata is ignored, there isn't anything to be done..
Adding L5 metadata to a cropped video results in overcropping IIRC.

I noticed that x265 can do Dolby Vision encoding now, and I'm thinking about transcoding my DV UHDBD rips to profile 5 so that they're playable with DV on my beloved Apple TV. I used to think transcoding was sacrilege, but I've softened in my old age and am now thinking that if I throw enough CPU time and bitrate allowance at the encode then hopefully it will be indistinguishable from the source, and if it gives a better experience overall (for me) then it might be worth it.

Some questions:

1) Has anyone tried this, and if so do you have any advice?

2) I understand that I can extract the source RPU with dovi_tool, but since profile 5 uses a different color space to profile 7 I assume the RPU would need conversion before passing it to x265? Is that conversion a feature that I could add to dovi_tool using the information that we have available (e.g. the Dolby test files with the same content in profile 5 and profile 8.1)?

3) Do I still need to jump through some hoops to get the static HDR10 metadata and give that to x265, or does the DV RPU completely replace and obsolete that information?

4) Is there anything else I haven't thought of that makes transcoding to profile 5 infeasible or a bad idea?

AFAIK, it's not possible to encode from profile 7 to 5 yet but you can encode to profile 8. I think I read some weeks ago in this thread that the appleTV now supports this profile ?

Code: Select all

x265.exe --crf 14 --preset slower --profile main10 --level-idc 5.1 --output-depth 10 --vbv-bufsize 160000 --vbv-maxrate 160000 --master-display "G(13250,34500)B(7500,3000)R(34000,16000)WP(15635,16450)L(10000000,1)" --hdr10 --colorprim bt2020 --colormatrix bt2020nc --transfer smpte2084 --range limited --max-luma 1023 --max-cll "0,0" --hdr10-opt --dolby-vision-profile 8.1 --dolby-vision-rpu D:\p8.rpu.bin --repeat-headers --hrd --aud --deblock -3:-3 --no-sao --chromaloc 2 --aq-mode 1

***of course, you adjust the hdr10 static metadata according to your source.

That's really weird. Never seen that with the Firestick nor internal player when playing cropped video, so it might be a bug with the UHD BD players...
They're not really meant to be playing anything but discs after all.

yes, as the documentation says, bluray players expect black bars for the subtitles.

there's the Netflix app but all content is 16:9.
Amazon prime crop all its content. I know Jack Ryan season 01 was DV at some point but this show is fullscreen. I don't know if there is other DV content there but If they were to stream more in DV, I think that would be a problem for the x700.
