New to MakeMKV - UHD Rips Not Working

Post by AP33r43 »

I've recently started trying to use MakeMKV to back up some blu-rays and have run into an issue that I don't understand. I've tried looking through the forums for a solution but not found any that explain my situation or how to fix it (or at least, none that I understood).

It seems like ripping regular blu-rays works, but ripping UHD blu-rays runs into what seems to be the same issue each time. I believe my drive should work as it is displayed in the UI for this, but it just... isn't. From what I understand, sometimes disks simply need a key generated or whatever by submitting them for that on here, but I don't know how to even tell if that's the case.

My drive appears as so:

Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom2
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-UD04
Revision: 1.14
Serial number: [REDACTED]
Firmware date: 2020-06-15
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 82

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8A10
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-US04
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.14
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

However, if I try to read various UHD blu-rays, I end up with the same thing. A log spam of things like:
  • 002004:0000 Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020..03F to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom2'
  • 002004:0000 Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT ESTABLISHED' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..080002400 to device 'SPTI:\Device\CdRom2'
Followed by:
003306:0000 Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as [REDACTED]
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Failed to open disc

Can someone please explain what I am even looking at or where to go from here?

That drive should read UHDs fine. Perhaps just wait until the UHD disk is recognized by Windows Explorer before starting MakeMKV?

I tried a few things and what seems to have solved it is using a different USB port. Probably my motherboard's USB stuff being shit as usual.
