Others use a NAS or a PC as their server.
If you go looking for a pre-made Network Attached Storage server, there are several that have Plex as a free add-on package. Just sourcing video to capable devices should not be an issue.

But, if you have "less capable devices", not able to take the full DV stream, it would be best to verify that the NAS has hardware capable of supporting Plex transcoding video. Synology servers can do it, but, even with Intel QSV on board, providing more than one transcoded video stream may not work out so well.

If you are thinking of transcoding 4K, have a read of this first: https://forums.plex.tv/t/info-plex-4k-t ... -4k/378203.

I feel like I'm getting closer to converting a DV .MP4 I have to a working .mkv but I feel like I'm missing something or something isn't working. I'm on OSX for what it's worth. What I'm doing is:

Open DV .MP4 with MKVToolNix 51.0.0, multiplex to .mkv, this displays in latest mediainfo as

I'm not sure what exactly is happening or what I'm not understanding. The resulting file doesn't seem to include the extra 1Mb/s bitrate from the EL, and it's also larger on the disk than the source file, and needless to say, doesn't trigger DV in Plex.

I think you'll need makemkv 1 15.4.

Current makemkv won't read the 2nd video file unless it's in a uhd bluray format. I'm no expert sonhopefullythis info is kind of correct.

you have tested the procedure of yusesope 8.1?

Hello DV fans,

I've been following this thread for a while and been reading up on trying to get DV encoding to work on my end. Been also following Doom9 and the two fantastic tools by yusesope and quietvoid for producing RPU, BL, ELs from a DV source. Unfortunately I haven't had success in my specific case.

Here is what I am trying to do: encode a DV + HDR10 Remux MKV to an encoded x265 DV + HDR10 MKV.

Here is what I have attempted previously:
1) Extract the RPU from the Remux using one of the tools
2) Encode the Remux with x265 using the RPU as one of the inputs using the -dolby-vision-rpu flag in x265
3) Pass the encoded output through mkvmerge
4) Pass the mkvmerge output through makemkv

At no point does the encoded output show as DV in the mediainfo.

I've also tried this,
1) Demux the Remux into BL and EL
2) Encode the Remux with x265 (with or without the RPU)
3) Pass the encoded output through mkvmerge with the EL as the second input
4) Pass the mkvmerge output through makemkv

Again DV does not show in the final mediainfo or for any of the temporary files that are created during the process.

Any tips / help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Reboot the app - kill the app process and then start the app again - fixed the problem for me. It seems that the Plex Android client app caches playback setting of files previously played (that is my guess). Renaming the mkv file name also works.
Yeah also thought of this one, since there are days when I am able to play back DV almost every time and then some days that even after restarting multiple times still can't get it to work. Today seems to be a bad one, since I get black screen like 9 out of 10 times.

Tried that and tried clearing the app cache, even uninstalling the entire plex system (client and server) --- didn't work!

I guess in my case I just have to wait til Plex irons it out
Have you found any solution to that problem?
I'm facing the same issues, no DV from single layer .ts files in Plex. Using Shield 2019 pro.

Does MakeMKV always rip to a single-layer for Dolby Vision?

I'm still a little confused about Dolby Vision and HDR regarding the layers.

It appears as though there is only one layer (track?) that contains the video, hdr base layer, AND the dolby enhancement layer?

I was expecting to see three difference layers (tracks?): Movie, Base Layer (HDR10), and Enhancement Layer...

Have you found any solution to that problem?
I'm facing the same issues, no DV from single layer .ts files in Plex. Using Shield 2019 pro.
Are your TS files profile 6? If so, the latest Plex client might have removed support for the older and deprecated DV profiles (6 in this case). Before reconverting all my files to mkvs, my profile 4 TS files were all working fine still.

Does MakeMKV always rip to a single-layer for Dolby Vision?

I'm still a little confused about Dolby Vision and HDR regarding the layers.

Here is my Spider-Man: Homecoming rip information:

It appears as though there is only one layer (track?) that contains the video, hdr base layer, AND the dolby enhancement layer?

I was expecting to see three difference layers (tracks?): Movie, Base Layer (HDR10), and Enhancement Layer...
Video tracks and HDR/DV layers are different entities here. On an original DV UHD disc, the base layer is delivered on video track #1 and the DV enhancement layer is delivered on video track #2. There is no third "movie" layer or track. What makemkv is doing is combining the two video tracks together so both the base layer and DV enhancement layer are delivered on a single video track. The end result is a single track dual layer file.

Thanks so much for the information.

Are there any tools to see the different layers inside a video track?

Also, can I convert between single-layer and dual-layer? For example, I've been told LG WebOS requires dual-layer dolby vision files. However, the Nvidia Shield TV requires single-layer dolby vision files.

Lastly, you describe the output as 'single track dual layer'. Does this mean the Nvidia Shield Pro cannot play them? I've read that it requires single-layer files only?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "seeing the different layers inside a video track". Mediainfo tells you that there are two layers (BL+EL) in video track #1. What other information are you looking for?

You can convert from dual layer (BL+EL+RPU) to single layer (BL+RPU), but there will be information lost so it is a one way conversion. Both the LG WebOS and Nvidia Shield 2019 can play dual layer files, but there are exceptions to each case. The LG can play dual layer files in either dual track format (mp4s muxed with mp4muxer) or single track format (ts files muxed with tsMuxer), but mp4 is the more reliable method and ts is more of ymmv. The Nvidia Shield 2019 can play dual layer files but only in single track format (ts or mkvs). However, there are picture accuracy issues when playing back these DV files on the Shield, so there are still issues to be resolved.

Thanks again so much and I apologize for questions not making sense. I'm trying hard to understand everything.

Does "dual layer" simply refer to a Base Layer (BL+RPU) + Enhancement Layer (EL) ? (regardless of which track the enhancement layer is located)

Does "single layer" refer to only a Base Layer (BL+RPU) ?

Does converting from dual-layer to single-layer remove the Enhancement Layer (EL) and re-create (re-encode?) a new Base Layer (BL) only?

Also, I'm purchasing the LG CX and users are saying that dual-layer playback was removed. Something else that confuses me is that if I search for Nvidia Shield dual-layer Dolby Vision, I see many posts asking for it to be supported.

I've also purchased a new Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) but I think I'd like to use my LG WebOS Plex client for now (if possible) due to the color issues with the Shield?

No, unfortunately the techniques we have available so far only removes the EL and does not re-encode the BL in any way. The BL and RPU are left alone.

I can't confirm it myself because I have a B9, but that's what I've been hearing about the X-generation OLEDS as well in regards to dual track DV mp4 support. I know it's confusing, but the majority of the time when layers are mentioned outside of this forum and even on this forum sometimes, they really mean tracks. The nvidia shield has dual layer support, but not dual track support. The only device outside of dedicated blu-ray players that can play dual track DV is the LG internal player (not the X-generation apparently). If you don't care about lossless audio and don't have an oppo/x700, then yes, you should be using your non-X generation LG WebOS internal player for the best picture accuracy.

Great new release, seems to run a bit smoother on some discs I was having trouble with as well as a bit faster I think? Ford v Ferarri currently ripping @ 3.3x on WH14NS40 modded 1.04 firmware in a Mercury Pro bay direct connect to Mobo. Before I was lucky to get 2ish

So I understand, this new version still won't magically make DV/Atmos Mkvs read DV in plex via shield pro 2019 because that's still on Plex? I will continue to use tsmuxer 04.06 to get that to work?

Maybe this will fix the issue I was having on a few DV movies that were stubborn and wouldn't apply DV/Atmos with the above method. For me the troubled ones were Spectre, Skyfall, Braveheart which I read up a bunch on the forums that these were problematic for others to get DV to recognize on Plex/Shield Pro 2019 after doing the proper steps.

Also, first post, so hello to all fellow ripping nerds, I am still fairly new to this wild west of tech, I do come from a fairly technical background, just not this specifically. Been using MakeMKV for about a year now, purchased a key after it did so much for me and my UHDs.
Hey there fellow new ripper! Did anyone ever respond to you on this? I'm in the same boat; my previous and currently working workflow is MakeMKV 1.15.2 --> eac3to to extract ac3+thd --> tsmuxer to mux the MKV and extracted Audio into a .ts. Then the .ts plays in DV+Atmos streaming from Plex server to Nvidia Shield TV 2019 hooked up to Sony A8G (DV profile 5 only). Wondering if anyone can help with these questions:

1. Does my workflow change with the 1.15.3 update? If the end goal is DV+Atmos through Nvidia Shield TV Plex?
2. Are there pros/cons of having a library full of .ts vs .mkv saves? The .ts method seems to be working, so ya know if it ain't broke, why convert everything to .mkv?
3. What's going on with the DV profiles? I've been hearing that Sony Bravia is only compatible with DV Profile 5 but I have several .ts that show up as Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.04.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible from the aforementioned workflow that trigger DV through Plex. So first question is: is my intuition right that "dvhe.04.06" means DV Profile 4 and/or Profile 6 (i.e not Profile 5)? And if so, how does it work nonetheless in my setup? The Shield is doing something to ensure compatibility between the source file Profile and the output Profile?
Super late to this and it looks like your response snowballed with more info but I want to say that my DV issues were pretty much resolved with the latest plex offerings for the shield (2019 in my case) and my qnap server. Every now and then I need to restart the movie or the shield on some movies for DV to kick in. That said, I am having issues with the latest LOTR extended rips as they are 80+Mb/s in the info panel! I am getting choppy playback issues over wired gigabit and it must be due to the bandwidth. Picture looks great, atmos is lovely but it seems like it can't keep up over wired gigabit. Am I the only one?

I'm also trying to understand this and I would like to join in on this Q&A, if you don't mind :)

For me the main question is: Do you retain all DV data (Full Enhancement Layer data and such) when converting from a dual-layer (MEL/FEL) dual-track to a dual-layer single track ? ..meaning that the converted file is of same quality (dv-wise) as the original BD when playing on dolby vision capable player such as OPPO UDP-203 for example ?
