Ripping Vs downloading

Hey all. I'm fairly new to ripping my blurays and dvds. Only done a few so far until my drive failed.
Recently got a new one, but it brought up a conversation from my partner. Why spend the time to rip from a disc. And then encode the parts you want. Which takes me perhaps a good half day per disc. (In my free time from work) Vs just download a copy from torrents and the like. Which with internet speed as it is, takes less than half hour.
Personally, I like the idea that these files are mine. I know exactly what quality they are at and what the contents are.
I've downloaded things in the past, but I have always tried to get a physical copy as well.
I thought I would ask people here. What makes you go through the hassle of ripping Vs just downloading it.
