Thanks Billy, you are correct that I did try the official LG BU40N encoder in my futile attempt to salvage this and can see that I have made it worse.. I apologise for my ignorance but how do I downgrade to BU40N 1.03MK with enc ? I don's see this as an option in SDFtool Flasher. Do I need to use a ...

The problem is, I think, that you've flashed a slim drive firmware like BP60 or BU40N to a regular internal drive. The WH16NS60 MK 1.02 is the recommended one.
