Looking for an external enclosure (In europe)
Hi ! I own a BU40N which is into an external enclosure powered by an ASMT ASM105X chip. Interface is with a USB3.2 (USB-C ) connector. Last week, the BU40 N refused to read a DVD. At first I though it was dying, as it is a 2018 made drive and had seen a lot of discs. So I thought I could try to read...

Re: Another dumb question
If you use the MakeMKV backup function to backup a DVD to ISO, it will remove copy protection/encryption (CSS) and change the region to all regions (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). However, it doesn't remove RCE protection, although I don't know if this matters since it is set to all regions. To remove RC...

Re: Installing as non-root user
I have been using *nix for 40+ years and have always had ~/bin in my PATH. And never once lost data or had my system compromised because of that... Well, these days of Javascript and "active" plugins from Web browser has changed the things a lot. Talk to a security expert and ask him abou...

Re: Installing as non-root user
Hello, Having, for a normal user, ~/.local/bin or ~/bin in the PATH variable is the worst idea one can have security wise. This will defeat the most basic security rule about Unixes which separate user privileges with system privileges. And will allow a malevolent person to install software through ...

Re: Another dumb question
Hello,
Changing the region code involve changing a file in the file tree of the DVD. Which is read only.
So if you know how to change a read only file on a read only file system, bob's your uncle....

Re: Solder new firmware chip - Pioneer UHD Drives
I agree with you to some extent. When you swap a chip from a failed drive to a donor board, you have the old chip and the new board. And the chip is a flash memory perfectly identifiable and well known. So you can read the data from one chip, save it and program it into the new one. * But the situat...

Re: Bluray ripping beginner
Hello, On all my Ubuntu machines, the BD/DVD drives I plug into (BU40N, Pionner and various DVD burner from many makers) are recognised and useable strait on be it with Brasero, MakeMKV, VLC, K3B or any program trying to access them. * You can "easily" rip your DVD or BD under Linux provid...

Re: Solder new firmware chip - Pioneer UHD Drives
Hi ! Having repaired some electronic boards with SMD chips, I guess this wold prove nearly impossible. First, you have to have the Pioneer drive to flash the chip on. Of course, you need to find and buy the proper chip new. (good luck with that) Then you have to solder/install the chip in order to f...

Discrepancies between libmmbd files
Hi Guys, On my laptop running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS I use https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/heyarje/makemkv-beta/ubuntu as the repository for the Ubuntu MakeMkv packages sinc some years now. So far so good. Trying to read a 4K BluRay, I discovered that VLC could not open with this message : <pre>aacs.c:25...

Re: Is there a preferred Linux release that MakeMKV works best with?
Frankly, what differentiates various GNU/Linux distributions ? The user interface mostly. So if you have the proper libraries MakeMKV is built upon, you're safe on this side. Kernel and system libraries are mostly the same across distributions so you'll be perfectly safe whatever one you choose. It ...
