Re: SDFtool Flasher
Hi! I've got an Asus BW-16D1HT which up until recently has been working great. On stock firmware it's handled dozens of DVDs/Blu Rays with no trouble, and last night I decided to move on to 4K. I used the SDFtool Flasher v1.3.6 (Write mode) to flash ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin from the All You Need Firmware pack. It seemed to flash fine, no errors.
Since then, I have about a 50% success rate with ripping 4K discs. Either it works fine, or it fails partway through with MakeMKV popping up an alert of "Failed to copy." All are fresh from the package, wiped with a microfiber cloth after a failure to check, but no dice. It seems to still be fine with regular Blu Rays. My Make MVK data is below. Would anyone be able to offer any advice? Thank you!

Yep, get yourself an additional drive, preferably a Pioneer!Newtons3rd wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 4:59 pmHi! I've got an Asus BW-16D1HT which up until recently has been working great. Re: SDFtool Flasher
But .... 50% success rate with a BW-16D1HT is extremly low?!?!
I have a BW-16D1HT also (@ firmware WH16NS60 1.02MK) and it can rip about 97 % of my 4K collection with about 200 movies / series.
For the unruly 3% I get my slim Pioneer drive out of the cupboard.
Yes, the pioneers are basically better, but this is an enormous fail rate

Admittedly I've only done a few so far, but only 3 of the 6 discs I've tried have successfully completed. LOTR Extended Editions Fellowship/Two Towers discs 1, fine. Discs 2, fail. Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse, fine. Across the Spiderverse, fail, so I thought I'd check in for advice. It still works great with DVDs/Blurays.zittrig wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 6:26 amBut .... 50% success rate with a BW-16D1HT is extremly low?!?!I have a BW-16D1HT also (@ firmware WH16NS60 1.02MK) and it can rip about 97 % of my 4K collection with about 200 movies / series.

That's... not what I was hoping to hear from the author of the suggested flashing software. Is there anything I did wrong? As far as I can tell I followed the directions as posted. Plus my understanding from the main post is that newer Pioneer drives can't be flashed.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 2:20 amYep, get yourself an additional drive, preferably a Pioneer!Newtons3rd wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 4:59 pmHi! Re: SDFtool Flasher
LOTR is known for a bad pressing. So you've started your 4K ripping unlucky. But with the BW-16D1HT LOTR shouldn't be any problem. I wasn't able to rip these discs with my first 4K friendly drive but that was a LG BH16NS40. After the change to the ASUS the ripping was successfull.
Try to wash the discs carefully with warm soapy water and dry it also carefully with a lint-free cloth.
Also try the firmware WH16NS60 1.02MK. (With that firmware you can eliminate the sleep bug also. Two birds with one stone.)

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! That's cross-flashing, right? Can I just run the Write operation, or do I need to Recover then Write?zittrig wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 5:05 pmLOTR is known for a bad pressing. So you've started your 4K ripping unlucky. There's nothing wrong with your first flash, it's most likely those discs. LotR, GoT etc are notoriously bad quality disc pressings and can be difficult to rip.
Don't be surprised if flashing another firmware makes no difference.
Cheers

Re: SDFtool Flasher
You do know the BW-16D1HT is essentially a rebadged WH16NS40 right? Asus don't make drives, they just source them from LG (and Pioneer before they ceased production).zittrig wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 5:05 pmLOTR is known for a bad pressing. No, I didn't knew that. Untill your post I thought the BW-16D1HT has to be a higher level drive with look to disc recognition, noise level and ripping quality.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 1:43 amYou do know the BW-16D1HT is essentially a rebadged WH16NS40 right? In relation to my expierience with my first 4k friendly drive BH16NS40band the problems with some discs which I don't had / have with the ASUS, I would never thought, the drives are the same quality. That is curious to me.....

Last week I had a BH16NS40 again for flashing for a friend and had the same problems with LOTR in testing. Another NS40, same problem and no problems with the BW-16D1HT, I've testet again a few minutes ago. So that is my expierience withe these drives, sorry.
But thank you for that information!

Yep, they are internally identical. I stopped selling the ASUS and LG desktop drives as their quality went down hill around about 2021. I was lucky to get 1 good drive out of every 10. Not good QC at all.zittrig wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 3:31 amNo, I didn't knew that. Re: SDFtool Flasher
Hello maybe someone got the same problem as me and i will get some help here.
I started the SDFtool Flasher and the gui looked "corrupted" so i followed the introductions on page one. clicked right on the exe got to properties, there i selected the the compatibility tab, clicked on "Change high DPI settings" then under "High DPI scaling override" --> "System (Enhanced)"
now i tried again to start SDFtool flasher but now there is only a little icon in the taskbar that shows that is it runnig. All i can do now is right click on it and close it and do the opposite of the settings that I have done previously.
How can I use the tool? The PC uses Windows 11. I have no Windows 10 PC here. So what have I to do that it runs on Windows 11 correctly?

That DPI adjustment is only for use on 4k monitors. Are you using a 4k monitor?
You could try downloading and using the older original version. You may need to install.net to use it though.
