Hi,

I kindly request some help before attempting any firmware flashing please. I'd like to confirm whether my specific drive revision is actually supported.

My drive:

Model: LG BP50NB40
SVC: NB50
ROM: LB20
Manufactured: Oct 2025

MakeMKV 1.18.4 reports:

Manufacturer: LG
Product: BP50NB40
Revision: 1.01
Serial: WR55 407598
Highest AACS version: 68

The drive works perfectly with standard Blu-ray discs:

Windows detects them
MakeMKV reads them
Full MKV rips complete successfully

However, no LibreDrive Information section is shown at all (no Status, no Drive Platform, no Firmware Support).


I also tested with UHD discs (The Shining 4K and The Thing 4K):

Windows: no media
MakeMKV: no disc inserted
VSO Inspector: no media
Drive spins for a few seconds, attempts to focus, then stops.


My question is:

Is this BP50NB40 revision (NB50 / Rev 1.01 / LB20 / Oct 2025) compatible with the current UHD flashing procedure?

Also, is it normal that MakeMKV doesn't show the LibreDrive Information section at all on this revision?

This looks very much like a "bad" (and possibly counterfeit) drive to me, or at the very least a drive with an enclosure that's not "playing nice" with MakeMKV. Did you buy it from a Chinese seller, perchance...?

Hi Sayaka, I bought it ionline from a random reseller, all the docs inside the drive box were in chinese, but other than that, the drive seems to be built with good quality... but it might be a "good" fake drive perhaps (these drives are very hard to get where I live, the only ones available are the ones from unknown brands).

There is also a Pioneer drive but it does looks fake to me... and it has almos no information so I got the LG drive. But I can return it if it´s fake and get this Pioneer instead I think...

The "LB20", "WR55" and the fact that there's no LibreDrive information, as well as the fact that "all the docs inside the drive box were in chinese", all combined make me think that this is indeed a counterfeit drive. You should be wary when it comes to buying from random sellers (sometimes they may even sell you a fake drive without knowing that it's a fake drive).

Expensive indeed, but at least it's guaranteed to be an LG drive and not a counterfeit drive. This website should ship to Argentina.

Hi again! Just wanted to let you know I finally pulled the trigger and ordered both Buffalo drives you recommended (I will use one for ripping and the other one just as a backup drive) so thank you for everything!

They're on their way now. And I will initiate the return of the fake LG today.

While I wait for them to arrive, I'd like to prepare everything in advance. I´d appreciate any additional tips if you have experience flashing these drives please... any recommended firmware/LibreDrive flashing procedure for each model or any updated guide for them.

I'd rather do it the safest way possible and avoid briking the new drives haha

You're using Windows, yes ? I assume you're planning on performing the flashing operations on Windows as well ? If so, I will try to post a more detailed guide for you within the next 48 hours. Nevertheless, please do post the Drive information/LibreDrive information sections for those drives when you receive them before proceeding, please.

For now I will say that the Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B-TAA is likely to be a BU40N with the MT1959 platform, and in that case you should flash BU40N 1.03-MK (likely with encryption), and then BU40N 1.00-DE if you wish to have DVDFab compatibility on Windows or if you have issues making 1.03-MK work on Linux (if you use Linux in addition to using Windows).

As for the BRXL-16U3, if it's a LG (likely) I believe it will likely be a BH16NS58 with the MT1959 drive platform, and in that case you should flash it to WH16NS60 1.02-MK.

If you are very lucky and the BRXL-16U3 turns out to be a Pioneer, you will likely need to wait for someone else to help you after posting the LibreDrive information (Billycar11 or possibly Coopervid should be able to help you). I know the names of some of the flashers used to flash Pioneer drives (DVRFlash, DVRTool, BDRFlash and then there's also Billycar11's flasher) but I am not experienced when it comes to using the Pioneer flashers and in fact I do not have all of them on my computer (and the same is true for the needed firmware files). Getting help from an experienced person is highly recommended when you wish to flash a Pioneer drive, as otherwise you might not even have access to the needed program/firmware files.

I'll be using Windows for all the flashing operations and drive use, and yes, I am also currently using PlayerFab for playback (Not sure if there is other option but I tried cyberlink and playback failed with that one), and I use MakeMKV for ripping my movies, so the firmware options are very helpful. As soon as I receive the drives, I'll post here the complete Drive Information and LibreDrive Information sections from MakeMKV for each one before attempting any firmware changes.

According to the current DHL estimate, the package should arrive on Wednesday, so there's absolutely no rush regarding the guide. Please take all the time you need!

Here we go.

First, you should download this (MartyMcNuts' All You Need Firmware Pack) : https://www.mediafire.com/file/bpl3pz2b ... 9.zip/file

as well as the latest version of SDFtool Flasher : viewtopic.php?t=22896

Unzip these files.

Then, please have a look at this to get acquainted with SDFtool Flasher :

The upper drop-down menu is where you select the drive. The rectangle on the right part shows the flashing operations. For your drives, this should be set to WRITE Firmware.

The rectangle on the left part shows information and additional options. It will confirm whether the drive has the MT1959 platform. It should also detect automatically whether encryption is needed. Should you need it, encryption can be enabled or disabled manually as well. "Include boot loader" should be left unticked.

The lower drop-down menu will allow you to select the firmware. For the BRXL-PUS6U3B-TAA, select DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin from the Slim External Drives folder inside Marty's All You Need Firmware Pack. (EDIT : Also, please make sure there is no disc inside the drive before you begin flashing.) When you are ready, click on START. Wait until SDFTool Flasher says "Ready" again and *do not unplug the drive during the flashing process*.

After each flash, close SDFtool Flasher, and unplug the drive and leave it unplugged for a minute. Then plug it back in, and check the MakeMKV information to make sure the flash succeeded.

For the second flash for the same drive (for DVDFab compatibility), the process is the same except encryption is not needed and the correct firmware is DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin from the Slim External Drives folder.

For the BRXL-16U3 (if it's an LG), same thing except you need to flash DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin from the Internal Desktop Drives folder. Encryption will likely be needed. I have no idea whether this firmware is compatible with DVDFab and PlayerFab though.

EDIT : Also, regarding Cyberlink PowerDVD, it is highly unlikely you will be able to read UHD discs/ISOs with it. It should work fine with most regular Blu-ray discs/ISOs, though.
