SBW-06D5H-U (A102, MT1959) - need downgrade-enabled (DE) firmware to flash BU40N 1.00 OmniDrive

Hello everyone

I recently bought an ASUS SBW-06D5H-U optical drive.
I tried to make it LibreDrive/OmniDrive friendly, and I'm stuck on the firmware rollback lock.
Tried: Flash HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_1.00_OmniDrive.bin and SDFtool Flasher 1.3.5 rejected it with error 0x82052603 ("Write DRAM NG 05/26/03")

I understand (from the OmniDrive Wiki) the fix is to flash a downgrade-enabled (DE) firmware matching my A-series SBW-06D5H-U first (in encrypted rawflash enc mode), which lifts the lock, then flash the BU40N 1.00 OmniDrive image.

Hoping someone can point me to (or PM me) the downgrade-enabled firmware for this drive.

The drive info:
- Model: ASUS SBW-06D5H-U
- Current firmware: A102 (A-series, encrypted)
- Platform: MT1959 (HLDS / BU40N-based variant — NOT the Pioneer E-series variant)
Could someone share / PM me the correct DE firmware for the A-series SBW-06D5H-U?
I want to use the right one and not a BW-16D1HT (desktop) or Pioneer (E-series) image to avoid bricking it.

I have a complete user dump (.tar) ready to send by PM if you need it to confirm the drive.

See guide below you must follow the flow flash chart then go to your desired fw

Or email me or Marty for an automated flasher that puts you down to 1.00

Just flash it to BU40N 1.03-MK first.

Hello everybody,

I'm hoping to get some guidance flashing my ASUS SBW-06D5H-U to enable UHD/LibreDrive support. I've read through this thread and it looks like my drive matches the exact revision/platform combo discussed here (A102, MT1959), including the same rollback lock issue.

Code: Select all

Drive Information:
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: SBW-06D5H-U
Revision: A102
Serial number: ****
Firmware date: 2124-08-05 14:55
Bus encryption flags: 1F

LibreDrive Information:
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
System: Windows 11 (also have access to Arch Linux and Zorin OS if a fix needs to happen from Linux instead)

From what I've read in this thread, it sounds like I may need a downgrade-enabled (DE) firmware for the A-series SBW-06D5H-U first, before flashing the actual target firmware. Can anyone confirm whether that's the right path for my exact revision, and point me to (or share) the correct DE firmware file? Happy to test and report back with results/drive info after each step to help others with this same revision.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The guide warns against ASUS↔LG crossflashing on slim drives — does that not apply to the SBW-06D5H-U specifically, since it's OEM-identical to a BU40N? I want to make sure before I do anything so I don't end up with a $150 paperweight.

The guide warns against cross-flashing desktop firmware to a slim drive and vice versa. ASUS do not make drives. They source OEM from LG (and used to also source from Pioneer). Your drive is an LG.

Since your drive has encrypted firmware (dated 2020+) you ,ust flash it to BU40N 1.03-MK firmware first, to remove the encryption. Then you can flash to the BU40N 1.00 omnidrive version if that is what you want.

So, I downloaded the firmware pack from the guide and none of the files had MK in the name. I flashed my drive using the BU40N and although I haven't restarted my laptop yet, it still says LibreDrive is not yet enabled. Where do I find the correct firmware file? Something with DE and MK in the name since other people who had success used a firmware file with a name like that. If you need more drive info, let me know and I would be happy to provide!

Did you use enc?

No. I did not. I didn't check in MakeMKV to see if the firmware actually changed. I will do that and get back to you with the results.

I didn't flash the drive again with the same firmware file using "enc" this time because I want to confirm something. Should I flash it again with the same file as before ("HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin" in the "LG slim BU40N" folder)? If not, what file should I try and if it's not included in that firmware pack from the guide, where do I find it? Really trying to cover all bases to reduce the risk of bricking my drive since I can't afford to buy another one right now.
