Dual DVD + HD DVD discs always pose a problem?

I've been backing up my HD-DVD collection recently. I noticed that 100% of the dual DVD + HD-DVD movies that DO NOT feature the red writing on the rim of the DVD side always fail. In otherwords, it's not all these dual discs, but all discs that are dual that were pressed by this manufacturer.

I tried in both a Xbox 360 HD-DVD and a LG Bluray / HD-DVD burner. I've literally hit about 10 movies in my collection so far that fall in this category, and all have failed with seek read errors. I've stopped even trying them anymore.

Any ideas? They seem to playback fine. Are these discs bad, is their a strategy in reading them, or is it a MakeMKV issue?
