MakeMKV struggles with discs DVD Decrypter doesn't

Post by SifJar » Wed Jan 28, 2015 10:08 pm

I was recently trying to rip a DVD ("Birds of a Feather" Series 1, region 2), and MakeMKV struggled to open the disc. After about 3 minutes of trying, it was still working on the 3rd title on the disc. Here's the log it produced:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.9.0 win(x64-release) started
The new version 1.9.1 is available for download at http://www.makemkv.com/download/
Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 has length of 34 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Complex multiplex encountered - 5 cells and 1768 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
Title #2 was added (5 cell(s), 0:29:23)
Complex multiplex encountered - 5 cells and 1754 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
On the other hand, DVD Decrypter (obviously much older software), opened the disc nearly instantly and ripped an episode just fine. For reference, here's the log from DVD Decrypter:

Code: Select all

I 21:52:29 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!
I 21:52:29 Home Edition (6.1, Build 7601 : Service Pack 1)

I 21:52:54 Operation Started!

I 21:52:54 Destination Folder: C:\DVDVolume\VIDEO_TS\
I 21:52:54 File Splitting: By Vob ID
I 21:52:54 Detect Mastering Errors: No
I 21:52:54 Remove Macrovision Protection: Yes
I 21:52:54 Stream Processing: No
I 21:52:54 Decryption Key: D5 CA 6F 01 9D
I 21:52:54 Extracting Sectors...
I 22:00:06 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:07:12
I 22:00:06 Average Read Rate: 2,636 KB/s (1.9x) - Maximum Read Rate: 3,521 KB/s (2.5x)
My query is how can a piece of software as old as DVD Decrypter open this DVD fine, when the newer, more updated MakeMKV struggles?

For the record, this is not the only disc I have experienced this problem with in MakeMKV, although I don't think I ever thought of trying DVD Decrypter with the others. I may have just MakeMKV running for a lot longer before.

Mike would have to provide the definitive word, but... from what I've seen, MakeMKV kicks into the multiplex decode mode when the IFO files disagree. Some disks that have this issue, when read by other programs (my experience was with Handbrake acting as a ripper), the results aren't always what you expect. When I ripped the original Ikkitosen disks with HB, for example, the scenes jumped around within the file. When Mike updated MakeMKV to be able to decode the disks properly, they went through the "Complex multiplex" process, and the results were episodes with all the scenes in order.

Lessons learned? Handbrake isn't a ripper, and let MakeMKV do its job.

Oh, and your log says that you've disabled detection of "mastering errors" in DVD Decrypter, so it probably has no clue there is a problem...

Hmm, I don't recall changing that setting, and can't thing of a reason why I would have, so I guess that must have been the default? Anyway, the resultant rip seemed to be what I was expecting, but I guess maybe that was just by chance. You say MakeMKV has been updated to decode these types of discs properly? Is that the 1.9.1 update, as that seems to be the only newer update than the 1.9.0 version I am running right now. (Just haven't gotten round to updating yet).

Decode properly as in walk though the maze to make sure the correct parts are in the correct order. That's the Complex Multiplex display you're complaining about.

Although I've noticed that the speed of getting through them varies with the processor speed. When I hit a disk like this (Viz Media likes to do it on a lot of their DVDs), the 2-core machine takes a LOT longer than the 4-core.
