Hi, got a highly rip resistant DVD :)!

Post by TrevorS » Mon Nov 10, 2014 6:54 am

The DVD is Parasite (1982), an early "Cult Video" "Full Moon" Demi Moore release (Canada, Koch Vision CUV-DV-8008) and I can't crack it with any of DVDdecrypter, RipIt4Me, or the current version (1.8.14) of MakeMKV. I'm running on Win7 Ultimate Sp1 64bit and BDs have been falling to MakeMKV handily, and likewise most HD DVD and DVD, but this title appears especially resistant.

The symptoms are, with the DVD in the drive, I launch MakeMKV and it presents drive and disc info on the right, but the "Protection:" field to the left is blank. It reports a single layer 4.28GB disc. I click on the drive icon and observe the following messages:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.8.14 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\Trevor/MakeMKV_log.txt
Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 was added (22 cell(s), 1:24:14)
Title #2 has length of 90 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #3 was added (8 cell(s), 0:16:04)
Title #4 has length of 30 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #5 has length of 10 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
No further messages are generated and the elapsed and remaining time indicators just continue to tick the seconds -- at this point it's hung and will continue ticking indefinitely. No progress at all in the "Decrypting data" bar and an unmoving "Opening DVD disc" bar. Below is the debug info for three different drives.

MakeMKV normally gets along fine with that BD drive, but I tried switching to a DVD drive instead. The same problem appears to occur with both (one USB3.0, the other USB2.0).

As the above two drives are USB connected, I though I'd try my ATA connected drive as well, but more of the same.

Sure hope you can figure something out on this. Thanks -- Trevor!

PS. I should mention the disc is clean, unscratched (looks new), and plays fine on a standard DVD player.

Just a thought! If there's something I can provide to help resolve this decryption issue, I'd be happy to assist!

You could try letting it run over night, as far as I can tell the debugs logs are just telling us that you cancelled the scan.

Please try the following - play the disc on a regular DVD player and note the title number for the main title. Then, try opening the disc with MakeMKV 1.9.0 using new "manual DVD open" mode. Just type the title number into manual string, and see if it works.

I just wanted to say thanks for the tip, worked for me on a dvd that did not behave. What I got without it was just the comersial at the start, not the actual title.

Hi Mike,

Sorry about the long delay, I just discovered you had replied to my problem report. Thanks, I just checked the title number. Although entering the title number allowed to skip some other titles and instead go straight to the desired title (1), it then behaved identically to before. After it accomplished nothing for approx eight hours, I tried to read the error log, but it apparently hadn't been closed properly(I/O error 32), so I guess that's a bug itself. Here is what I copied from the screen:

Code: Select all

Everything after the "Title #1 ..." message was generated after I stopped the program.

It appears as though MakeMKV can't follow the series of data blocks following the start of the title -- something causes it to get lost and hang. There's no indication that it's actually still running, other than it hasn't formally quit!
