Backup of "Bears" and "The Rover" both hang

Post by johng » Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:54 pm

I just downloaded MakeMKV and have tried to make a backup of 2 bluray disks and both of them hang during the backup. Any help debugging why would be appreciated. Both are new releases.

OK. I don't have the "Bears" disc anymore, but will have "The Rover" for a few days. I enabled logging and am re-running it now. The movie was just released today, so it's a brand new disc from Netflix, so it shouldn't be any physical issue with the disc. Also in both cases I believe MakeMKV hung up while copying the main .m2ts file, and by hung up it doesn't hang the computer the copying file progression bars stop advancing and the time remaining just keeps increasing until I hit abort.

So anyone see anything in the log file to help figure out what is wrong? I tried redoing this with "Decrypt video" unchecked and it worked fine, and the checked "Decrypt video" for a 2nd try and it failed again. Both log files are below.

Nothing obvious to outsiders, but the debug codes may give Mike (the author) the clues to determine what is going on. They point out specific work-arounds being applied to what is being read from the optical drive, where it deviates from what is expected.

It looks like "DEBUG: Code 0" is where things fail. Any idea what that code means? I looked through recent threads and I don't see Mike posting to any of them? Do these errors ever actually get fixed? I've tried 2 new release discs so far and neither has worked, so not too impressive. I've got another disc coming in next week and if that one fails I think I'm giving up on MakeMKV unless Mike actually reads these posts and makes timely fixes.

Create a testdump and email it to support.

I've had numerous MakeMKV problems fixed this way, Mike has been extremely helpful.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I watched the movie and have sent the disc back. I'll be getting a new movie this week so I'll see if backup works with it and if not I'll email in a testdump.

What windows version do you have? Have you installed any 3rd party UDF driver?

I have Windows XP SP3 with all fixes installed, and I have the Toshiba UDF 2.5 driver installed. I've used other SW to read off the bluray drive and I can read files fine.

Yet the error comes from the UDF driver. It thinks that UDF volume on theses discs is not properly finalized and returns an error. Also, Toshiba UDF driver blocks direct access to the disc, so MakeMKV can't work around.

MakeMKV itself doesn't require UDF driver, so you can disable it temporarily as a workaround.

What is the best way to disable the UDF driver? I see I have the file thdudf.sys (the Toshiba UDF 2.5 file) in my \Windows\system32\drivers directory, but not sure how to just temporarily stop it from working. If I go into the device manage and look at the driver details for the Bluray drive that driver isn't even one of the ones listed. I tried doing the testdump, but that hangs too and I still only see the .txt log file, no .tgz file - is that going to be in a different location?

OK, I actually have a Bluray disk at home that I bought of Gran Torino, so I just tried to back that up and here is the error which looks to be similar to the other disks. Regarding the Toshiba UDF driver I originally installed that because BDInfo could not read the Bluray disks. I also have an evaluation copy of AnyDVD HD, and it reads Gran Torino fine, so I'm not sure why the UDF driver wouldn't cause similar issues with that program??? Anyways I'll also run a testdump and email that to you for Gran Torino.

OK an update on Gran Torino. I didn't get a reply on how to disable a drive so I just renamed it and rebooted, and re-ran MakeMKV and the backup worked. So it looks like the issue is caused by the UDF driver. Still don't know why AnyDVD HD works, and since MakeMKV doesn't use the UDF driver it seems like it should be able to work around the issue too don't you think?
