Blu-Ray and DVD Copy Speeds

Post by perfectionist » Mon Apr 22, 2013 4:00 am

About 3 or so versions ago of MakeMKV I could rip a DVD at the same speed as a Blu-Ray, roughly 16 M/s. Now with the newer versions I can still rip a Blu-Ray at 16 M/s but when I do a DVD it won't go above 5 or 6 M/s. Why is this? Is there a setting that I can change to make it rip DVD's faster?

No, it always reads as fast as your drive allows it.

The latest (v1.8.2) MakeMKV rips just as quick as the previous versions. I just saved a standard DVD movie that reached Read Speed: 19.9 M/s (15.1X) during the process. The DVD drive specifications are normally the largest factor limiting the read speed that can be achieved. So if you have more than one DVD device make sure you're ripping from the fastest one. But in my experience the quality and mastering of the individual DVD also makes a significant difference. Almost every DVD I rip is read with a different speed! This is true for standard DVDs as well as for BlueRay disks.
