ASUS BW-16D1X-U (A105, MT1959): makemkvcon spins at 100% CPU at “Scanning CD-ROM devices” when a disc is inserted

Hi,

I’m setting up an automatic ripper on Linux. My new ASUS BW-16D1X-U hangs in makemkvcon as soon as a disc is in the drive. The same drive and discs work fine on Windows.

Setup
  • Drive: ASUS BW-16D1X-U, firmware A105 (MediaTek MT1959), external with its own power supply, connected over USB (usb-storage)
  • Host: Intel NUC, Ubuntu Server 26.04
  • makemkvcon 1.18.4 (ARM Docker image) and 2.0.0 (jlesage/makemkv image). The behaviour is identical in both.
What happens
  • With an empty drive, makemkvcon -r info disc:9999 lists the drive within seconds.
  • With any DVD inserted (tested with 3 different discs), makemkvcon -r --progress=-same info dev:/dev/sr0 stops at “Scanning CD-ROM devices” and never continues. I’ve left it running for 9 hours.
  • One makemkvcon thread runs at ~99% CPU in userspace (state R), and the other threads sleep. Nothing is blocked on I/O.
  • It also hangs with networking disabled (docker run --network none).
  • Meanwhile the drive responds normally to SCSI commands from Linux: sg_inq works, and TEST UNIT READY returns Good.
  • The same drive and DVDs on Windows with MakeMKV 2.0.0 work without problems: “Using direct disc access mode”, and all titles are listed.
Debug log (--debug), ends here:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.18.4 linux(x64-release) started

Using 262272KB for read cache.
Network access is ENABLED, CURL version 7.81.0/OpenSSL/3.0.2/1.43.0 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) , proxy server not set.

Already ruled out
  • USB disconnects: on USB 3 the drive kept resetting while udev/blkid probed the CSS disc. A udev rule that skips blkid on sr* fixed that, and the drive is stable now. makemkvcon still hangs.
  • Permissions: running makemkvcon as root gives the same result.
  • Docker: both privileged and non-privileged containers give the same result.
Is there a setting, or an SDF file for this firmware, that avoids the hang on Linux? I’m happy to run more tests or send the full debug log.

Thanks!
