did I luck out on the Buffalo external lottery?

I know it was a gamble, but I purchased this from BH Photo Video as a backup to my WH14NS40. If I'm not planning on ripping UHD / 4K discs is the firmware flashing necessary? if so, would it be recommended to remove it from the enclosure and plug it directly into my computer for the firmware update?

If not ripping UHD discs, you don't need to flash it but flashing it to enable libredrive can still be of benefit for blu-ray discs as having libredrive enabled will allow the drive to continue working even if/when the certificate ever get's revoked by a newer AACS revision. If it is revoked and libredrive is not enabled, you would then have to wait for a MakeMKV version update before you could rip blu-ray discs again.

as marty is saying you dont need to flash it if you not doing 4K
but i can be flashed in the case no need to take it out
and buffalo is quite unfriendly to that they voided a guys warranty just because of that.
follow guide for WH16NS40
or email me or marty for the auto flasher

Or this person could use KEYDB.cfg alongside FindVUK and DVDFab, since they seem to be using Windows...

This may sound like a dumb question but will flashing the firmware on it prevent it from burning BDXL's or other BluRay media?

Usually no but sometimes when you cross flash from LG to Asus it can happen but if your following the guide and go to wh16ns60 you should be fine

ok thanks for the clarification! I put the firmware on WH14NS40 which is in my pc, and i'll plan on putting it on the buffalo external later on today or this week. since both are native LG drives it should be fine..

WH16
NS60 1.02-MK is the recommended firmware. It reads faster and removes the UHD sleep bug.
