DVD rip issue title with fake cells failed to open

Post by Nefarsis » Thu Aug 15, 2024 3:45 am

hi i am relatively new to using MakeMkv and only been using for about a year now. i have not seen this issue pop up and think that i might have to splice files to make it work but i hope not. i am trying to open dragon ball z season 8 disc 1 but when i use the stock or standard settings i am only getting 15 chapters out of the 44 there should be on the title i want. i tried using manual mode but when i key in title 11 the one i am looking for and shows the length i want it gives the error -

Open DVD manually : "11"
Fake cells occupy 64% of the title - assuming fake title
Failed to open disc

when i try to open the disc normally not using manual mode this is the text i get.

Using direct disc access mode

in manual mode this is the disc info:

13: 6/1 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)

what is even more odd i have gone through seasons 1-7 with little troubles if any, in fact the only issue i ran into was a bad disc on season 7. all of season 8 seems to be the way or at least disc 1, 2, and 3 so far. since the eopisodes shrink in count as the discs go on i have not found out if it is an issue in all of season 8. if i am missing something that can help let me know.

thank you.

I am also having this issue. It occurred for me on Dragon Ball Season 3 Disc 5. I tried a lot of similar things including using Open DVD manually with a title:chapter and started getting read errors but when I play the disc on VLC it seems to playback just fine.

I'd be curious if you get the same errors I got if you tried a Open DVD manually: 11:1-44

I dug out my Dragon Ball Z Season 8 Disc 1 and tried it out and got the same error you did.

yeah so when i open it manually it does give me an error (this error) when i use 11:1-44

"Using direct disc access mode
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #0 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #5 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #6 does not match one in IFO header.

Title #11 (2:25:45) was skipped due to navigation error
Failed to open disc"

i did not have any troubles with season 3 any of the discs. i wonder if it is due to production timing. hmm... i also have disc 1 of season 7 loaded and i tried to open it manually to see what it said and it showed me this:

Disc Information
Label : DRAGON_BALL_Z_S7_D1
Titles count : 12

Title information
1: 1/1 - 2 chapter(s) 0:00:13 2 cell(s)
2: 1/2 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
3: 2/1 - 1 chapter(s) 0:01:00 1 cell(s)
4: 3/1 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
5: 3/2 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
6: 3/3 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
7: 4/1 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
8: 4/2 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
9: 4/3 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
10: 4/4 - 1 chapter(s) 0:00:00 1 cell(s)
11: 5/1 - 44 chapter(s) 2:25:11 64 cell(s) (this part with the cells is completely different then the one on season 8)
12: 5/2 - 26 chapter(s) 1:54:19 26 cell(s)

since this is different i wonder if this is what i need to target. 64 cells? but which cells? ugh....

so i have done some digging. i am on this thread now and referenced going back to version 1.16.7. so when i used 11:1-44 in manual mode it gave this error:

Using direct disc access mode
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #0 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #5 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #6 does not match one in IFO header.

Title #11 (2:25:45) was skipped due to navigation error
Failed to open disc

then i tried it normally and it gave me a different output with 8 chapters but those chapters are not long enough, a standard episode is 24min and around 10-20 sec. these pulled up at 19 min. no intro and outro maybe?

so this is the log i got i with running it normally.

Thank you for suggesting the downgrade to v1.16.7. I was able to extract my problem disc Dragon Ball Season 3 Disc 5. Although it was broken up in separate episodes instead of one big file.

As for Dragon Ball Z Season 8 Disc 1, I've been ripping the "Marathon Mode" versions and was able to get that successfully. You may want to check out the MKVToolNix program. I've been able to use it to split up and merge together .mkv files and you can split by chapter. I know this isn't ideal but you could probably add in the intros and outros that you want with this tool.

i actually did go and find that tool. i tested it this morning and i think it will work to stich the files together. i was able to get all of the chapters to rip but in separate titles. this being said i should be able to get them ripped and then i will be able to merge them. i am still trying the manual mode as i feel there is a way that would work.

i am very glad that downgrading worked on dragon ball. i have not done them yet and feel i will need to go through that issue as well when i get to them.

thank you for letting me know. if i can get season 8 to work i will at least get it wrote down how i got it.

*face slaps*

i don't know why this works but it is working for me. takes a lot longer to do it but season 8 disk one is complete.

so there are files or cells i found that just did not work no matter how hard i tried on manual mode to get them to work. i ended up backing up the disc to my drive one to make things quicker to try and second this next part takes a while.

oh by the way i reverted back to version 1.16.7 again. 1.17.7 just does not work for this for some reason.

so i tried 11:1-7 to single out one episode to see if i can get that to work and it did. worked without issue. i tried 11:8-14 for the second episode but it would not work. then i tried 11:15-21 and it also worked. wait what??? why didn't episode 2 (on disc) not work.

so then i tried 11:1,9-14 and would you guess it pulled the intro from episode 1 and used it on ep 2 and it worked.

so i got it to work using:

11:1-7 for episode 1
11:1,9-14 for episode 2
11:1,16-21 for episode 3
11:1,23-28 for episode 4
11:1,30-35 for episode 5
11:1,37-42 for episode 6

i know have all of the episodes off the disc and i can format them from there.

this is episodes 220-225. off to try this on the second disc and so on through season 9. GT worked just fine without issue. i will report back if i find any more squirrely setbacks.

thank you.

Well fudge. Immediately ran into an issue. For some reason disk back up is grayed out on 16.7. Didn’t have time to swap back to try newest version to get a backup of disc 2 but ripping halted for now until I can figure that out. :?

I've also gotten stuck with this particular Dragon Ball disc. I ripped into MKV and can see two large files (2 separate episodes). In fact there should be 3 separate episodes, but one is missing! Do you mind explaining how you downgraded to v.1.16.7? I feels like if it worked for you, it's my only hope...

so i found a way around it on version 1.17.7. long story short the reason i felt that the older versions worked better for me at times was the way they display their error messages. i feel like 1.17.7 gives the same errors but in a more simplified manner. on 1.16.7 i found the errors to make more sense. however i ran into more issues on 16 than 17.

i found that i could not backup the disc to my drive on 16 for some reason. no matter what settings was there (i am sure i might have missed something i am a noob on this stuff) i could not get it to work. i did get disc one to rip so i knew disc two had to have the option since i got the same stuff running it normally. this being said i went back to 17.7 and i was able to back up the disc like normal. YAY!! back to square one on disc two.

to get each episode separated you need to open the disc manually. preferably off your computer not off the disc cause it makes it easier if you run into an issue.

on a normal disc in the seasons the chapters break up as follows

1-7 - episode 1
8-14 - episode 2
15-21 episode 3
22-28 episode 4
29-35 episode 5
36-42 episode 6

this is based on the disc having 6 episodes or it could be less but usually follow this chapter list. season 8 however has 103 cells per the title 11 where season 7 has 64 cells. they both share the same 44 chapters but i figured the extra cells had to be causing the issues. i still dont know the cells relation very well yet but was able to get the chapters break out to work and it seems that each disc is different for this season. now i have only done disc 1-3 by now but am going to get all discs on season 8 and 9 done and upload the chapters i use once i get them figured out. but here is disc 2 and 3.

if pulling each episode in manual mode one at a time it would look like this:
11:1-7 episode 1
11:8-14 episode 2
11:15-21 episode 3
11:22-28 episode 4
11:29-35 episode 5
11:36-42 episode 6

disc 1 i have already posted but disc 2 and 3 are the following

disc 2
11:1-7
11:1,9-14
11:1,16-21
11:22-28
11:1,30-35
11:1,37-42

disc 3
11:22,2-7
11:22,9-14
11:22,16-21
11:22-28
11:29-35
11:22,37-42

basically the intro is what is getting messed up on the mapping on the disc i guess. this being said since you can pull the intro from episode 1 on disc 2 you see i used it for every episode except ep 4 of that disc.

hope this helps you understand the chapter lay out. i have a feeling that is what is stopping the dragon ball seasons as well. i have not started converting those but will here shortly just to see if i can get them done. i tried using decrypter when i started and was unsuccessful but it is not user settings friendly. makemkv is as long as you know what you are looking at. now to figure out cells so i can use that if needed in the future.

thank you.

so i have completed discs 4-6 on season 8 now. well kinda working on disc 6 now as it will take a while. let me explain.

disc 4
11:22,2-7
11:22,9-14
11:22,16-21
11:22-28
11:22,30-35
11:22,37-42

disc 5
11:29,2-7
11:29,9-14
11:29,16-21
11:29,23-28
11:29-35
only 5 ep so no ep 6

disc 6 however had to be difficult.
12:1 11:2-7 (i had to pull the intro from title 12)
11:9-14
11:16-21
11:23-28
11:30-35
only 5 ep

since i had to pull the intro from another title it saved it as another file and now i am having to go through and combine the intro with mkvtools (thankfully works just tedious) but i will get there before the end of the night.

i however wanted to show what my season 9 disc 1 looks like -

I love most all things Anime. The more i can watch it the better i feel. also repair everything. no need to buy new. why throw it away unless it is completely useless but most things are not.

One way to get the title you want is to play the disc and you can get the title information that way via the right-click context menu

yeah i was going to try that once i got the time. was curious if it was going to be easy an opened the first disc in manual mode and found that only to cry in terror of the formatting. all good though i will be doing what you said to find hopefully the correct one and hopefully it is easier than season 8 (not holding my breath though.) i have learned a lot these last couple weeks though about discs. kind of amazing really.

thank you.

okay i have finally gone through both seasons now. this is what i had to do. not fun either one of them but interesting all in all.

Dragon ballz season 8
needed to run
episodes normal disc 1 disc 2 disc 3 disc 4 disc 5 disc 6
1 11:1-7 11:22,2-7 11:1-7 11:22,2-7 11:22,2-7 11:29,2-7 12:1 11:2-7
2 11:8-14 11:22,9-14 11:1,9-14 11:22,9-14 11:22,9-14 11:29,9-14 11:9-14
3 11:15-21 11:22,16-21 11:1,16-21 11:22,16-21 11:22,16-21 11:29,16-21 11:16-21
4 11:22-28 11:22-28 11:22-28 11:22-28 11:22-28 11:29,23-28 11:23-28
5 11:29-35 11:22,30-35 11:1,30-35 11:29-35 11:22,30-35 11:29-35 11:30-35
6 11:36-42 11:22,37-42 11:1,37-42 11:22,37-42 11:22,37-42 only 5 ep only 5 ep

Normal is what i would expect the episode two pull when ran normally. through season 8 i had to pull the intro from another episode and add it to the rest of the episode i was pulling. such as disc 2 ep 3- 11: (is the title) 1, (is the intro) 16-21 (is the rest of the episode.)

Dragon ballz season 9
needed to run
episodes normal disc 1 disc 2 disc 3 disc 4 disc 5 disc 6
1 11:1-7 67:2-7 74:2-7 47:2-7* 50:2-7 67:1-7 69:2-7
2 11:8-14 67:9-14 74:9-14 47:9-14 50:9-14 67:9-14 69:9-14
3 11:15-21 67:16-21 74:16-21 47:16-21 50:16-21 67:16-21 69:16-21
4 11:22-28 67:23-28 74:23-28 47:23-28 50:23-28 67:23-28 69:23-28
5 11:29-35 67:30-35 74:30-35 47:30-35 50:30-35 67:30-35 69:30-35
6 11:36-42 67:37-42 74:37-42 47:37-42 50:37-42 67:37-42 69:37-42
7 11:43-49 normal normal no ep7 no ep7 no ep7 no ep7
intro 99:1 99:1 99:1 99:1 99:1 98:1
outro 47:14

season 9 was all over the place and in the end i found it easier to rip the episode minus the intro and add the intro in later with MKVtoolNix. this was pretty easy to add the intro and fix the chapters so they read correctly.
*disc 3 was odd. pulled the first episode but it was in the 20 min mark even though pulling 2-7 should give you 22:20ish time. since it was short i ripped but found the outro or ending credits were not there. so i ripped those as 47:14 and will add those just like the intro's

thank you for listening to me on this and bouncing many ideas. this helped me a lot. off to more dvds.

*edit just noticed my tables did not look right. i need to go to bed now but i will tomorrow when i can. sorry.
