Questions about a drive

Post by P13r_ » Wed May 03, 2023 2:08 pm

Hi,
I recently bought an hitachi-lg BH16NS40 and even though on the site it says that this drive can read BDXL up to 128GB, if i put a 4k disk in it, it won't show up.
1. Do i have to flash a firmware?
2. Do i have to return the drive and buy another one? (i was looking an asus BW-16D1H)

I leave attached a photo of the drive and a screenshot of what makemkv says.

I also have an hitachi-lg BU40N, but i wanted to change it because i didn't like the form factor, and kinda slower rip times.
anyway this drive can easily read 4k drives and it isn't even patched

Generally speaking, LG & ASUS drives require flashing to rip UHDs. Check out the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide

yes. i did check it and browsing around i found the file for mine but i don't think that mine is 100% supported for 4k, because yes now it can read and rip 4k disks but, won't go further than 3x speed and while doing so, making a strange noise.

Rip speed varies by disc. MakeMKV will slow down the rip speed if it is having trouble correctly ripping the disc. Often ripping slower improves the odds of a successful rip. The noise you hear is probably the laser head backing up to read a section of the disc a second (or third, etc.) time.

The data density of a UHD is pretty high. With 3-layer, 100GB discs, it is about 140x more data in the same physical space as a 700MB audio CD. It is a wonder it works at all.

If you have a large stack of discs to rip, it is probably best to use two or more optical drives at the same time. Turn on the 'Ask for single drive mode' option in Preferences.

ye i know, but i have another drive also hitachi-lg BU40N, that can read and rip 4ks even without flashing a new firmware, and it rips faster the 4ks than the new BH16NS40, and it's a slim form factor, which by any means, slims are slower. So this let me think that my BH16NS40 it's not really capable of reading 4k, and i should change.

here's a screenshot of the BU40N

Your assumptions aren't quite accurate. Technically yes, the max speed for the BU40N is 6x for UHD and 8x for the NS40 but you will generally get that 6x speed from the BU40N for most of the rip, whereas the NS40 may reach 8x for some moments of a rip but for a lot of the rip it will only read at 5x-6x. Therefore, in the end, the BU40N is usually the quicker drive to complete a rip.

this is a known thing a BU40N is faster than a stock or flashed BH16NS40 if you flash it to a WH16NS60 it will be slightly faster than a BU40N

so, do i have to flash the firmware from WH16NS60 to my BH16NS40?

nono my BH16NS40 stays at 3.0x the entire time it rips a 4k disk
and while doing it making a "not so happy noise" (i leave attached a video, put the volume to max to hear it)

well 1 you didnt follow the guide
2 could be bad drive disc or fw

You put the absolute worst firmware available on the drive, so that won’t help. For the best chance at some decent speeds, flash WH16NS60 1.02-MK firmware to it. That may also help with the noises.

where do i find the MK firmware, because i found the "all you need firmware" zip, but the firmware it's not the MK or is it?

oh ok thx a lot, i flashed it and now when ripping 4ks goes close up to 8x which good enough if not better than the BU40N :D
