Hi,
I'm trying to use MakeMKV for playing blu-ray discs by streaming them to VLC. It worked fine over a year ago, but the newest version won't let me play my discs because it seems to lock the drive at 1x read speed.
Things I've tried:
•AnyDVD HD will let me play the disc, so the problem isn't with the disc or the drive. AnyDVD is very expensive for the lifetime license, and I refuse to lease software (I want to be able to play future discs without buying a new license, and afaik no other software currently offers a lifetime license)
•Tried VLC, SMplayer, and even Windows Media Player. VLC and SMplayer result in a glitchy screen after the 5 second buffer is used (or just a black screen in VLC when forcing direct rendering), WMP just forever buffers and will let me play an amount of time equal to the amount of time I let it buffer (which is how I figured its locked at 1x read speed)
•buffer size setting in MakeMKV settings seems to have no effect. Also, the buffer bar on the streaming screen doesn't fill at all and shows 0.0x read speed.
•tried with a fresh install on Windows 7 (64-bit) when I upgraded my system (same blu-ray drive and GFX card, different CPU - went from high end AMD to Intel i7)
•tried other discs, same result
•I'm not sure which version of MakeMKV is the one that broke compatibility with my drive. I might try to figure that out at a later date if no fix is found, but the older versions don't have updated AACS keys, right? (so I won't be able to play new discs)
My system specs:
Blu-ray drive: ASUS BW-12B1ST
CPU: Intel i7-4790k
GFX: ASUS AMD Radeon HD7970 running at 2560x1600
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1866 CL 8-9-9
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installed on an SSD, also have a WD Black HDD
Other info: very sufficient cooling, Prime95 stable, passes Memtest86+
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Drive locked at 1x speed when streaming
Re: Drive locked at 1x speed when streaming
I have what sounds like the same issue. I can play Blu-rays with PowerDVD without issues, but when I try to stream to XBMC with makemkvcon it buffers for about 5 minutes before playing for 20 seconds. Lather, rinse, repeat. Same issue trying to tune in the stream with VLC. I haven't measured the data to know it's reading at 1x, but it's certainly not fast enough to watch a movie. My system has fairly similar specs, too:
Blu-ray drive: LG WH14NS40
CPU: Intel i7
GFX: Radeon R9 270 running at 1920x1080
RAM: 10GB
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installed on an SSD
