Computer crashes when using Makemkv

#1 Post by dmac1974 » Sun Dec 28, 2025 1:01 am

I have been using Makemkv for years with no issues. A few months ago I picked up an LG WH14NS40 to add my 4K collection to my Plex server. It worked flawlessly for all but a handful of my 4K disks. Then a couple of weeks ago I started to go back through the failed ones trying to get them to work. Now everytime I run Makemkv it crashes my PC and causes a reboot. I have gone through all the recommended steps to try to isolate the trouble including replacing the LG drive with no change in behavior. As a last ditch effort I have performed a clean install of window 10 and only installed Makemkv and it still causes a reboot. It is not at the same point everytime...sometimes it is almost right when the disc spins up, other times it makes it all the way to copying files to an MKV. The PC will run indefinitely but crashes everytime I try to use Makemkv. Running the latest ver 1.18.2. I have an external usb case on order to see if I can run it from my laptop. My PC is getting to be a little on the old side but I'd rather not have to build another one if I don't absolutely have to. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

If the optical drive works in an external case with your laptop, that suggests either a piece of wonky hardware or a bad driver on your PC. Since you did a clean install of Windows on the PC, I assume all the drivers for the hardware were up-to-date which more strongly suggests wonky hardware on your PC. It might be a bad cable connecting the optical drive… or a bad port on your motherboard. Or it could be failing stick of RAM or any one of a hundred things.

Yeah I am starting to think it isolated to something between the PC and the optical drive. I was able to launch Makemkv without a disc and open and a backed up bluray (m2ts) files on the hard drive and convert to mkv without any issues. Will report findings when my enclosure arrives.
