Hash Check Issue

#1 Post by Elephen » Thu Jun 20, 2024 12:00 am

In 2019, I bought The Rockford Files complete series on bluray. Disc 1 has 6 episodes. At that time, I was able to rip 5 of the episodes. After being taught a few new tricks on this forum, I tried again to obtain the missing file. For some reason, MakeMKV reports that 3 of the 6 files have hash check problems. Please see log below. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I assume you're using the Pioneer BDR-212U in some kind of external enclosure? How is it powered?

Errors like this:

Code: Select all

002003:0000 Error 'OS error - (ipc/send) invalid destination port' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00003.m2ts' at offset '316145664'
usually mean the drive doesn't have enough power and it disappeared from the OS while it was trying to rip. This happens most commonly on USB powered drives.

My external drive is AC powered.

A couple of times I bought a 4K movie that MakeMKV could not rip because of some issue with Hash Check. I was surprised to see that problem arise with an old set of bluray discs.

Blu-rays and 4K UHDs have as part of their specification something called the content hash table. You can think of this as checksum data about the contents of the disc. MakeMKV uses it to verify that the optical drive is correctly reading the data from the optical disc. If MakeMKV sees that some of the data that was read doesn't match what was expected based on the content hash table, it directs the optical drive to reread the disc. If MakeMKV can't get the correct data (there's a retry limit in MakeMKV's preferences) it shows a hash check failure in the log.

Usually this is because the disc is dirty or has damage that prevents the optical drive from correctly reading everything. The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again.

In your case, however, it seems like something is causing the drive to become unmounted from the computer for brief moment. MakeMKV was doing its work, verifying what the drive was reading, then, while the drive was reading location 316145664, the optical drive no longer appeared to be connected to the computer. That's what the cryptic 'invalid destination port' message implies.

In the case of USB powered drives, it is possible that MakeMKV asks the drive to do something that requires more power than is available from the USB port(s). The drives recklessly try to do it anyway and when they try to draw more power than is available, they do the optical drive equivalent of rebooting and thus they do disappear from the computer for a brief moment. The drive recovers nearly instantly, but it ruins the rip of the file it was reading.

Since your drive is AC powered, this is unlikely. There is a slim possibility that the DC transformer that powers your enclosure is too small, but that's very rare. (The transformers that power the external enclosures that hold my optical drives all output 2A @ 12V.)

It might just be a strange manifestation of how your particular drive interacts with a dirty spot on that disc. It couldn't hurt to try gently cleaning the disc and trying again assuming there's no physical damage to the disc.

Hello.

I tried cleaning that Season One disc with denatured alcohol, but that didn’t change the outcome. This disc doesn’t appear to be damaged. Then, I turned off and rebooted my computer and cleaned another problematic disc in that set and asked MakeMKV to make a backup. The backup was made, but now 4 of the 5 episodes have a hash cheek issue. Fortunately, the one file that MakeMKV can read had been missing from Season Five of the series possibly because of an episode-numbering discrepancy between TVDB and IMDb. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing whether my drive is disappearing while in operation.

In any event, I really appreciate your taking the time to assist me.
