Very odd read error experience

#1 Post by baishen » Tue Jan 23, 2024 2:45 pm

I was ripping a brand new bluray and ran into the dreaded read error. https://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/

One of the titles kept throwing read errors. I took the disc out and blew off any dust that might have somehow landed on it. Still the same read error on that title. I then unplugged my LG USB drive and plugged in my backup drive which is the same model but different revision. Same read errors.

I then attempted to use MakeMKV to create a disc backup without decryption. This successfully completed but MakeMKV reported some errors. I then used ddrescue to copy the disc to an image. Interestingly, that completed with no reported errors. I attempted to open the image in MakeMKV but it couldn't download the HK data as the domain wouldn't resolve. Not sure why it needed to do that as it had been able to decrypt the actual disc just fine.

Life got in the way so I left the everything as it was. Some time later, due to unrelated reasons, my machine ran into an issue and I had to do a full shutdown and power off. Once I brought it back online, something possessed me to try ripping the disc once last time. Lo and behold, it ripped perfectly. No errors at all.

No idea what happened but I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else deal with a read error as mine was seemingly not a physical issue with the disc or drives.

LG/Asus drives are just super inconsistent like that. Some times they just need a reboot to work

First time I've ever run into it. Probably done close to a thousand different discs with them between cd, dvd, br, and uhd.
