Blade Runner 2049 reports bad sectors BUT VLC can transcode the entire file

#1 Post by Jman9980 » Mon Apr 24, 2023 6:10 am

Forgive if I am posting in the wrong place or if I am posting on a topic already sorted.

Hello, So I bought a pre flashed drive and wanted to try ripping a disk. I put in Blade runner 2045 and it ran for a bit and then reported a file error.

Per what I found on the form, I tried doing a file copy to hard disk and received a similar error. According to the artical on the form, I have a faulty disk.
Then to add some fun, I tossed the file at VLC Player Convert/Save and it ripped the entire file with no errors. Mind you it looked like trash but it ripped.
That raises the question of, If the disk is bad, How did VLC rip the file, I am suspecting a copy right trick like they did back in the day for Commodore 64 protection.

Any ideas? I am not really worried about Blade Runner 2049, It was just the only UHD I have handy for testing the new drive. and getting familiar with MakeMkv

- MakeMkv reports file errors. "Drive sounded ANGRY"
- Windows file copy reports errors on the disk when doing a file copy to local disk. "Drive sounded ANGRY"
- VLC player can trans code the entire file no errors. "Drive was silent. Quite happy doing its drive things"

Attached is a snip of what MakeMkv reports for the drive i am testing.

What are you using for a drive? Does the offset change on different runs?

When MakeMkv attempts, the drive sounds ANGRY. When VLC attempted, the drive was silent. no head rattle.

The log from VLC looked like this. I used the profile Fast 1080P

In reply to the question, "Does the offset change on different runs?"

I will run a couple of runs and see.

Well, Your support is fast. This is my first UHD.

I have done nothing, Not even reboot since my last attempt. I have to think that it downloaded a new hash
"Downloading latest HK to C:\Users\Dad/.MakeMKV ..."

Now then Can I ask the best setting in Handbrake for movies like this?

Ok so it copied the files, but now Handbrake tells me it is copy protected.
I need to sort that out.

The reason for asking if the error moved is that some external drives run out of power when they start spinning full speed (late in the run), which is what looked like was happening in your first run. The sector where things fail usually moves around when that happens. If it doesn't move... then it's likely the disk itself has a bad spot on it, and cleaning fixes that (usually).

VLC won't normally run the drive at full speed, so it didn't get that error, but it doesn't decrypt the file, either.

There ARE ways to slow MakeMKV down... I used to make it write to a USB drive to slow it down a long time ago. There is an official way to do it for non-UHD disks, too. But it's best to make sure your drive can make "full speed" by giving it full power.
