Please help, makemkv behaving differently in LibreDrive mode

#1 Post by poor soul » Thu Feb 17, 2022 9:36 pm

Hello,

Well, to make this brief and as painlessly to read as possible, something unexpected happened today. I was about to backup my bluray and as I launched makemkv and it started to read the disc, I noticed for the first time "Using LibreDrive Mode" which I thought was unusual since it was the first time it popped up. I started to test other discs (ones I backed up just last week) all opened in the same mode. The biggest pain the rear however is that it now limits my drive's speed to 2.0x which is PAINFULLY SLOW. One of the movies took me 1hr and 5mins, when just a week ago I could do it in 20 mins.

I actually had a similar problem in the past, about 3 years ago. The same drive was only copying at 2.0x until I found out that it was actually locked to silent mode. It was quite a process because I had to "unlock it" by going to a manufacturer's website. What I think happened here is this LibreDrive mode restricted my drive back to silent mode, it now never goes above 2.0x ripping speed. I don't know of any other explanation for this.

Can anyone help cure this problem? Is there a way to disable LibreDrive mode? I checked preferences and I can't find anything there. It just popped up out of the blue I have no idea what caused this.

Ok, first of all, this IS due to LibreDrive. You have a Pioneer drive that is now supported by LibreDrive - which is actually a very good thing.
First, I'm going to explain what happened, and then - the current workaround.

The LibreDrive support for Pioneer drives is an ongoing work. An unfortunate side effect of new LibreDrive code was that (rarely) some USB drives stopped working at all - the USB power was insufficient and LibreDrive handshake was stressing drive too much. So the drive that was connected with insufficient power but worked before suddenly stopped working. Yesterday I've pushed the update that put the Drive into "silent mode" for the LibreDrive handshake. Unfortunately, due to bug/oversight the drive is not being returned to default mode after handshake. Please note that we talk about "current" mode, LibreDrvie does NOT modify EEPROM, once you power cycle your drive it would return to the settings you've put with Pioneer Drive utility.

The proper workaround is to enable MakeMKV speed control for this drive - viewtopic.php?f=19&t=22689 . For Pioneer drives it would automatically switch drive to a silent mode during the disc scan and on layer transitions, and would enable performance mode during the bulk copy. This way you would get the best performance out of your drive. However this setting is not set by default for now, so hence the experience you're getting.

You need to set the following speed setting for your drive (please see the details in a link above):

Code: Select all

speed_XXXXX = "0=99"
Where XXX is your drive ID, it can be looked in the log file.
Once again, apologies for the experience.

Ok, things move fast. I've just pushed the update, even without speed control you should get an old behavior - MakeMKV would honor the speed setting from drive config.

I opened the app today without issue, but needed to apply a new key.

After restarting, the app is crashing with my external USB drive connected during initial read.

Occasionally, I can get it to throw a few codes, similar to "OS Error - System device not connected." and repeats a different, but similar error three times, before the application becomes unresponsive and crashes.

The drive is bricked after this and unresponsive, requiring a power pull to reset, then relaunching both the drive and makemkv.

I suspect this is due to the new Libredrive mode and Pioneer drive support, and what you have described above.

I have uninstalled makemkv and reinstalled, deleted the files in the C:\Users\XXXX\.makmkv folder. This has not resolved the issue. Below is a debug file, if that makes any sense. Let me know what else I may be able to provide to assist.
