Back up greyed out
Hi
I am trying to back up some of my bluray movie disks and a few makemkv doesn't give me the option to back up which is strange. Are there unknown limits to making decrypted backups?
a few of the discs are LOTR FOTR special features and appendices.
Thanks

Re: Back up greyed out
Double check that you didn't try to back up a DVD (instead of a Blu-Ray Disc).
Re: Back up greyed out
Many commercial BD sets come with DVD versions of the extras.

Re: Back up greyed out
Hi
Thanks for the help, its definitely bluray the disk size is over 30gb, and this set is specifically a bluray set (google the middle earth saga)
when I open the disk it says in the log something like- multiple (something) to scan will take a while. would this have an effect?
any ideas would be great
Thanks

Re: Back up greyed out
The backup option is only available if the disc is not "open"!!
Good Luck

Re: Back up greyed out
If that message was like this, that's a DVD, because BDs do not have VOBUs.
A quote from an Amazon review:Complex multiplex encountered - 1 cells and 1803 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
To be clear, this review is for the Lord of the Rings trilogy bluray 15-disc extended edition box set. The movies themselves are blu-ray, but the extra features are DVD discs, by design, which is ok.

Thanks for this, so I looked at the disc and your right, the extras with the hobbit trilogy are Bluray (hence makemkv had no issues) but the extras for LOTR are dvd format.Woodstock wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 10:39 pmIf that message was like this, that's a DVD, because BDs do not have VOBUs.

Is there an easy way to back up the files of a dvd disk like I was doing for the bluray disks with the hobbit?
Thanks for the help
Re: Back up greyed out
If your reason for using backup is to preserve menus and such, the "best" way to do a DVD is to save an ISO of it, preferably with the encryption removed. Players can then treat it just like you'd inserted the DVD itself. I've used a program called "BDLot" in the past, which hasn't been updated in a decade or so, but it's still available from several sites for download.
That, of course, is a bit wasteful of space, because there's at least 20% overhead in that, versus creating MKV files, AND you can post-process the MKV files with tools like handbrake to reduce their space requirements.
Some people don't worry about space, but... I have 70TB available, and I just had to do some clean-up to get back down to 35TB in use, so I still worry about space.
