Compression protocol

#1 Post by Randolph » Fri Feb 14, 2020 7:25 pm

Hi, is there any chance that MakeMKV will offer x265 in the foreseeable future? Now that resolutions keep getting higher (and so files getting bigger and bigger) this would be very useful.
Greetings,

The main job of MakeMKV is to copy your data from the optical disc, as fast as possible. MakeMKV can convert audio and subtitles on the fly because it can do it in parallel, faster as it reads data, so you get no delay during copy. This is not a case with h.265, as it is a rather time-consuming process. So that makes little sense, especially when we have an excellent and free Handbrake.

The current usual workflow:
- make an uncompressed MKV (40 minutes)
- run handbrake and recode to h.265 (several hours).

Doing it in MakeMKV would mean that your drive would be occupied/stressed for hours for no reason.
