Borders borders borders help

Hello! I have tried to backup several of my DVDs using makemkv and I continually get borders on the sides in addition to the top standard borders. These are all 16:9 Widescreen DVDs. So when I play them back on plex or vlc or QuickTime they have the frame around the movie (does not fill up the screen on the sides). I cannot find an answer why this is happening. My blu Ray movies and some of my DVDs are fine, work perfect! Any help would be appreciated.

Do you see the same borders when you play the original, commercial DVD on the same system?

Yes it plays full widescreen fine on the DVD player and on the computer using the DVD drive

Could be a widescreen movie authored as 4:3 with borders.
