Burning MakeMKV's backups onto BD-R

I've seen plenty of How To's describing how to burn an HD video onto Blu-ray. If I already have the necessary file structure ready (same as the one that MakeMKV creates for its backups), can I just burn that file structure straight to the BD-R? Will that give the same results, or do I need to create an ISO?

I've created plenty of data BD-R's using growisofs, copying files onto a BD-R. I just wondered if the same would work with a Blu-ray backup.
