Hi all,

I’m a new to the forum and looking for the BH16NS58_1.03MK.bin patched firmware for LibreDrive.

My external Buffalo MediaStation contains an internal HL‑DT‑ST BD‑RE BH16NS58 drive:
Firmware: 1.03
Drive platform: MT1959
LibreDrive status: Possible, not yet enabled (per MakeMKV System Information)

Since makemkv.com is still offline, I’m unable to download the patched MK firmware. Any chance someone might be able to send me or provide access to BH16NS58_1.03MK.bin, or a temporary mirror of the BH16NS58 patched firmware folder?

It's back online, but anyway I would recommend MartyMcNuts' All You Need Firmware Pack instead (from the SDFtool Flasher thread inside the UHD drives subforum).

If you are using Linux or a Mac, please let me know and I can give you the instructions for the command line.

Short answer : DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin is the firmware you need, you will likely need to flash it with encryption. Then after that, flash DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin without encryption if you wish to have DVDFab compatibility on Windows. Otherwise, leave it with the DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK firmware.

This is my first post here, so I'll give you a bit of biography and history along with my request. I think it's sad that Pioneer no longer make optical drives and sold their optical drive business to the Chinese. I assume they still play CDs in their Car Stereo Systems, but the optical drives are made in China. I had a nice slimline Pioneer Blu-Ray burner with an old Toshiba Satellite that was stolen in Perth and I had to replace both. I ended up with a new HP ProBook and an LG Ultra Slim Portable Blu-Ray writer that has yet to play a Blu-Ray for me and is locked to a UK region code at the moment because the only way to play Death In A French Garden seemed to be to get a UK disk and change the region to suit. Now I can't play any of my other DVDs (I have a copy of The Bourne Supremacy here) without changing the region code and eating up one of my 4 possible region code changes.

I have Peril (essentially the same movie as DiaFG) on Blu-Ray - two disks in fact - the first one was wobbly and seemed about to vibrate the drive to bits. So I have 3 polycarbonate copies of the movie and only one plays right on my box at the moment.

BTW, I'm showing my age, but I remember when Pioneer released their 6-disk CD changer and I had one in the early nineties. It only read one at a time but it did it well. It was an old SCSI device and worked flawlessly on OS/2 Warp 3 as 6 distinct drives with LUNs 1-6, I think, and 0 reserved for the controller. These things were so popular back in the day that there was a time that I could have got more by selling it on the secondary market than it cost me new! No Way Was I Selling It. Pioneer seems to be into other things these days, but there's so much that can be done with the polycarbonate disks.

I also have, somewhere, a Yamaha LaserDisk player - Yeah, a 12" LaserDisk, it was used for karaoke and it plays, or at least played, CDs as well. Think of the capacity of a 12" polycarbonate disk with Blu-Ray technology.

BTW, Yamaha, My 2020 Yamaha R6 was tuned like a stallion on PCP. At 10,000 RPM it used to go crazy - It unceremoniously kicked me off the back on MayDay 2024 and I've been a pedestrian ever since. The bike is worth more as evidence against the insurer than it ever could be as a working bike. Those jokers who sold it to me didn't even provide me with what I asked for when I paid list price - a tool to adjust the rear suspension. They couldn't even sell me a socket to loosen the rear axle. They didn't even follow the checklist for the first service and the chain was and is loose. Something is terribly wrong with the servicing of Yamaha bikes in Oz. They'll take your money all right, but after that it's all downhill.

Anyhow, I'm running Debian Trixie (stable) and I'd like to rip my DVD of Death In A French Garden (UK region coded) (Incidentally it was named that and made in response to the English film Draughtsman's Contract, which it completely outclasses, IMHO.), so that I can set the LG drive - a BP50NB40. Maybe Yamaha Music retains the ability to do optical drives. I wonder, can I get Yamaha and Pioneer together for my dream drive. Do I have plans for Pioneer and Yamaha and JVC too, with their wood cone speakers and their 3D cameras?

Not really relevant here, but Olympus seems to have kept their nose clean after that corruption scandal a decade or so ago, how about some of those old APS Film Camera sets, upgraded for USB-C, programmable shooting and perhaps TDK Chrome data stripes and adapters to put them onto things like telescopes and microscopes. All packaged nicely, with a special fluorescent green in memory of Queen Elizabeth II? Purple too, and Forest Green, and a shade below Mid-Gray..

Anyhow, could someone please help me with compiling MakeMKV for Debian Trixie on my HP ProBook, and any appropriate mods to my LG BP50NB40 that I can install from Linux. (It no longer has Windoze on the NVME.)

Debian Trixie does not have version 9 of ffmpeg, so no need for the ffmpeg patch as far as I know (the one mentioned in another topic in the Linux subforum). Also, instead of using makemkv-bin-1.18.4, please use this instead for now : https://makemkv.com/download/old/makemk ... 7.6.tar.gz

Ignore the libavcodec part in the topic I linked to, it is outdated.

Feel free to use makemkv-bin-1.7.6 with makemkv-oss-1.18.4, as far as I know they are compatible with each other.

Once you've got MakeMKV running, please post your Drive Information and LibreDrive information (feel free to remove the serial number part). We might be able to flash your drive to make it "better", as in LibreDrive-enabled (I believe having LibreDrive enabled would also completely remove the DVD region code issue).

Linux (and even Windows, really) Blu-ray playback can require many things. In your case, we will try to take the simplest path based on your Drive/LibreDrive information, and also if possible you should use your drive solely (or almost solely) for ripping. Purchasing Blu-ray drives has gotten much harder (and more expensive) lately and ripping your discs rather than playing them will ensure that there's less drive wear.

If you insert a Blu-ray disc into your BP50NB40, can it detect the disc, at least ? As in, can you mount it and see it in your file explorer ?
