Hangs on Fedora 44 when scanning disc

Been using the flatpak happily for some years on Mint, but now in the process of migrating to Fedora.
As soon as I insert a disc and the GUI reports "Scanning CD-ROM devices" the makemkvcon process goes to 100% CPU and nothing happens.
Tried running on the command line and get nothing useful
Tried the docker container and get the exact same behaviour.
This is the same machine as I'm running Mint (dual boot), so don't see it can be a hardware issue.
My next step would be to try build from source, but https://www.makemkv.com seems to be on its summer holidays.
Anyone else on F44 got it working (or not)?
