BDR-XD07J-UHD UHD Firmware

Post by h436d »

Hey Guys,

I got a BDR-XD07J-UHD, but it can't seem to extract UHD discs it keeps getting scsi errors I think I may need a custom firmware.

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD07U
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: RCDLXXXXXXJP [redacted XXXXXX]
Firmware date: 2017-10-30
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 81

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8D31
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-BDS7
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.00/ID69
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
I wondered if I need a custom firmware, or if perhaps upgrading to pioneer firmware 1.03 might work.
I managed to guess the firmware URL for V1.03 based on the one for V1.05.
https://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/i ... W105EU.exe
https://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/i ... W103EU.exe (changed 5 to 3)
But then based on another thread where his drive reported libradrive enabled but he still couldn't read UHD I thought perhaps I need a custom firmware, and upgrading to V1.03 might not help.
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32945

The error is as follows

Code: Select all

Using direct disc access mode
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020..03F to device 'SG:dev_21:0'

Saved AACS dump file as /home/user/snap/makemkv/627/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v70_MARVEL_STUDIOS'_SHANG-CHI_-_ULTRA_HD_5717.tgz
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Your firmware is fine and do not update it.

Ensure you have enabled internet access in MakeMKV's preferences. You also may have an issue where your computer is blocking access to the MakeMKV servers (in Russia).
Cheers :D

Thanks so much for your reply. I have internet access enabled in preferences, I have no way of knowing if someone might be blocking my communication with the servers because I don't know where they are. There are no errors in the logs about updating any files or anything. Is there anyway to force it to attempt to check for updates so I could look for errors in logs?

EDIT: I just looked at viewtopic.php?t=25670

It seems I have access to https://www.makemkv.com/svq/sdf.bin so that doesn't seem to be an issue.
There is a comment further down that says "If you're getting that error then it means 1) Your disc isn't supported with local db 2) There is a new HK but MakeMKV is failing to download it for whatever reason. "
So I guess since there are no errors downloading I probably have the most up to date files and perhaps the disc just isn't supported? Does that sound about right? Is there anyway to know if I have the latest files?

EDIT2: Referring to viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16883
It says you can specify a keydb.cfg file manually and put it in your MakeMKV data directory which I have now done.
However I followed the step to check if a key exists for your disc by looking for the SHA1 hash of the file Unit_Key_RO.inf from the disc, and I wasn't able to find one in my keydb.cfg.
73a886037381e1ff3d1a9b6d9fbe6f6dfdf0e343 Unit_Key_RO.inf
I can only assume the database that MakeMKV refers to for keys thinks it has a key as MakeMKV doesn't say "the volume key is unknown for this disc" but instead prints a ton of SCSI errors.
Is it possible that the SCSI errors are just not being caught properly and are really an indiciation that "the volume key is unknown for this disc"?

Can you test some other UHD discs? It may be that your Shang Chi disc isn't supported but that would be quite odd as it's been around for a couple of years, unless it's a new pressing perhaps. You can email in the generated dump file to svq@makemkv.com and wait a couple of weeks for the key to be added.

As I said, it'd be best if you can try several other UHD discs to rule out any server/download releated issues. If other UHD dics work ok, it's probably just that disc. If all other UHD discs do the same, then you may have other issues.
Cheers :D

Thanks again for your kind reply. I put an edit on my last comment showing that the SHA1 hash of the file didn't appear to be in any keydb.cfg file I could find online.
However I also tried 3 other UHD dics and they all generated similar SCSI errors.
I find it very curious that it's generating SCSI errors instead of printing the "the volume key is unknown for this disc" error as described on viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16883

The only other possible lead I have is that when I start the program it shows some warning about "CAP_SYS_RAWIO" before the SCSI errors start.

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.17.7 linux(x64-release) started
Failed to get full access to drive "PIONEER BD-RW BDR-XD07U". Make sure that you either have write access to device "/dev/sr0", are member of "cdrom" group or have CAP_SYS_RAWIO enabled.
Using direct disc access mode
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A30..0020..03F to device 'SG:dev_21:1'
.... scsi errors ....
Looking online seemed to indicate this was not a cause for concern though as many users have this error and it seemed like MakeMKV no longer needed those permissions.
I Just wanted to also confirm I have no problem with regular BDROM discs with AACS, it is only these AACS2.0 UHD discs that fail for me.

The errors at the end are also a bit confusing, as it is my understanding that AACS host certficate revokation isn't an issue with libredrive anyways?

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT ESTABLISHED' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..080002400 to device 'SG:dev_21:1'
Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as /home/user/snap/makemkv/627/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v72_How_to_Train_Your_Dragon-_The_Hidden_World_A954.tgz

Looks like you're using the Ubuntu snap build of MakeMKV.
This error here means you'll need to grant permissions for the app.

Code: Select all

Failed to get full access to drive "PIONEER BD-RW BDR-XD07U". Make sure that you either have write access to device "/dev/sr0", are member of "cdrom" group or have CAP_SYS_RAWIO enabled.

Open a terminal and run this command...

Code: Select all

snap connect makemkv:optical-write
and see if that fixes it.

Thanks MartyMcNuts and segfaulted. The problem was solved thanks to both your help.
I just installed the apt version of MakeMKV in the end and that worked without issue.
Windows 11 also worked fine when I tested it just now.
Sorry I should have thought to try that sooner.
Thanks again for both your help!
