Bridge on the River Kwai

Post by filmgeek47 »

Hey all,

Looking for some advice. First copy of Bridge on the River Kwai in UHD failed to even mount in my otherwise awesome Asus bw-16d1ht. Had this happen once before (Last Jedi UHD). Followed my typical routine (tried cleaning the disc, then exchanged). Unfortunately, the new disc is also not mounting. Do I have a bad batch? Is it worth trying to get another copy? I saw a post somewhere about this drive struggling with triple layer discs...

Has anyone used this drive (or one of the otherwise identical versions of it) to rip this disc?

Does it matter that the drive works with the vast majority of the UHD disc's I've ripped? Would you suggest just getting another drive of the same model?

Thanks.

No and no
Bu40n is the only drive I trust now

Like u said it only seems to happen on BD 100s so your drive is bad for those and those discs are not that common you can try cleaning the lasers but I would say its about a 25% chance it will fix it. And not with a cleaning disc you need to clean the laser directly with alcohol not plastic brushes on a disc.

A little tight on cash right now, so I'll give that a shot. Any tips on disassembling a drive? I'm handy but I've never done that specifically.

Thanks. No luck unfortunately (although it does sound like it’s getting closer to mounting, if that makes any sense).

Any other popular Bd100 discs that you know of that I can try ripping to verify that it’s a drive issue?

Sometime the drives gets stuck in a loop and wont read.
My Bios in on Hot swap so a just pull the power out the drive and repower or you could physically unplug the PC and reboot.
Midway did the same last week, taking forever. So I repowered and it was ready to rip in 15 seconds.
this has worked and has ripped every disc so far.
worth a try

Huh. So my drive ripped like a half dozen of the titles on that list no problem. Perhaps I just got two bad discs from the same batch?

The only way to tell if it is a bad disc is to try it on another drive.

Not UHD but I have come across BD discs in the past where my LG drive won't rip it successfully but my Pioneer drive can. Doesn't mean the LG drive is dead (as it can rip other discs just fine), just that sometimes the drive is just really picky.

It is ideal to keep two drives, best from two different maker although with UHD ripping that isn't possible (LG make all LibreDrive sold under different branding).

Unfortunately I don't have another drive to test with (and my sole issue has been with a couple of UHD discs). I've setup a return and I'm buying one more copy from a different seller. I figure if the third disc also fails I have my answer, but if it works I've saved $100+ on a new slim drive+enclosure.

Thanks for the help/input everyone.

It's just a tricky disc to rip. My LG and Asus full-size drives both choked on it, as I recall. I think I was finally able to rip it with my BU40N.

Got myself a Bu40N. Same disc opened in like three seconds. Anyone beating their head against the wall exchanging bad discs, FYI it's probably the type of drive you're using.

yeah BU40N is so much more reliable than the desktop drives for some reason glad it worked out for you.
