barboot,

prior getting another drive, you should probably try another BD ripping software (e.g. DVDFab Bluray Copy, AnyDVD HD).
I own an external brand new LG BD burner myself and during my experients I found several BDs causing similar error plus others (e.g. dying MakeMKV console app).

AnyDVD HD was capable of cleanly ripping the BDs in the same drive, so i rather suspect a MakeMKV issue. MakeMKV worked fine for me on most of my BDs though.

When having issues ripping directly to MKV, I find that doing a full-disc backup and then creating the MKV(s) from that backup sometimes helps, too.

I can only second this. I was not able to process the BD set for the Alien Anthology but could dump them to ISO with AnyDVD HD without issues.
To me it seems that the win-win combination here is AnyDVD HD and MakeMKV despite the warnings MakeMKV issues when you access a BD through the decryption layer of AnyDVD.

Just to clarify, I meant a full disc backup with MakeMKV, rather than AnyDVD (which I do also have, but only use for DVDs nowadays). It often works, even when MakeMKV can't create an MKV file direct from disc.

Plus, MakeMKV can use BD hash checks to make sure the rip is fine (I've occasionally had issues when playing and/or re-encoding AnyDVD's ISO output).
