Drive won't work after Failed Makemkv rip

Post by TheDragonNidhogg »

I have been ripping blu-rays for my plex server for a while now. I've ripped hundreds of blu-rays without issue, and have even ripped blu-rays for movies that came out this year, in 2025. However, I recently got a hold of some anime blu-rays I had been wanting and started with Disc 1 for The Saga of Tanya the Evil, link to amazon store page is below for clarity. Makemkv was working fine at first, and ripped the first 3 titles I had selected without issue. However, when I came back to my computer after walking away, I notice the fourth title had been trying to rip for almost an hour. I originally thought the disc might have been defective or scratched. So I took it out and put it back in, making sure to clean it with a microfiber cloth. However, now my disc drive does not even detect that a disc is present. Windows Explorer will not see it, and makemkv will see me open the drive bay, and try to read it only to show no disc after a bit. I have included a screenshot of this below. It isn't the disc either. I had ripped a movie just before starting on Tanya the Evil and to test this, I put that blu-ray in but got the same result. Windows Explorer thinks the drive is empty and Makemkv reports no disc. I forgot to take a screenshot of the error code when it failed, however my drive has been flashed with LibreDrive for two years now and I've not run into anything like this issue before. I've tried restarting my computer as well, but it has changed nothing.

Is my drive bricked? Is there any way to fix this issue? And how did Tanya the Evil manage to screw up the drive, despite the first three titles ripping perfectly fine?

I don't know what drive you have, but sometimes optical drives need to be rebooted. LG based drives seem especially prone to getting confused. Just power off the drive for a few minutes and then start it up again.
