WH1640, w/ LibreDrive, speed enabled- Still Slows to a Crawl

Post by HappyWill67 »

Hi, Old, New Guy Here that probably has issues speed!

Been using Make MKV for many years with great success. Old drive went bad and just got a a new LG WH16NS40 1.05, made in Sept 2020. Tried to rip a Freaks and Geeks Blu-Ray box-set to watch on my Plex and the ripping said it would take 5+ hours (would have gone higher but I shut it down after 30 min) for 1 disc. Even set it to do just 1 track and got a similar result..

Read through many pages, flashed it to WH16NS60 1.02, Set Speed to 0=99 in the reg and am still having the same luck. It does seem to read semi-fast (5.3) in the first few minutes but then quickly throttles down to the same crawl as above.

Any insight? Hopefully I've done something 'dumb' and it's an easy fix? Been at it too long now and I'm just about to give up!

Thanks for your response!

F&G discs are brand new.

Even tried old discs that are blemish free that I've ripped in the past and got the same initial speed boost but then back down to a slow crawl.

Drive can be that bad already? It's 4 days old.

Well, that's frustrating... Even more so because if I let it run (or rip) for a few hours I'll get an episode so the drive works to some extent, just not the extent I was hoping for. It'd probably take a day or longer to get 1 disc by my estimation...

Even brand new first-time-out-of-the-package discs can sometimes have a virtually invisible film on them that hinders reading. It is either the result of off-gassing from the plastic case or some oils left over from production. Gently cleaning with isopropyl alcohol or dish soap can help.

Or your drive might be dying.

It could really be either. Fortunately cleaning the disc is cheap and easy.
