SCSI Error - Read of Scrambled Sector without Authentication

Hello,

Have encountered my first issue with MakeMKV after successfully ripping around 20 DVDs and Blue-Ray disks. Could anyone advise what could be the cause of the following?

It occurs immediately upon startup of MakeMKV for a DVD that appears to play fine in DVD player. I haven't seen any other reports of this specific SCSI error on this forum.

I'm using the internal DVD drive of my MacBook:

As the message suggested I tried to eject and reload the disk with MakeMKV running resulting in the error being reported a 2nd time.

Finally - same issue if I use the BD drive on another Mac

Update:
I have been ripping some DVD box-sets and noticed that I get this error on pretty much all disks. What I had not noticed however until trying to rip these box-sets that the error is really some form of warning - that rips of these disks are still possible and I seem to be able to ignore the error.

I got the "SCSI Error: Read of Scrambled Sector..." message when I was working with the L'Avventura CR DVD. The log is below. This was a brand new DVD, although released more than 10 years ago. I tried the "Pledge" process, as well as two other drives. All of the drives gave the "Scrambled Sector" message. The back cover of the DVD says that it is a "RSDL dual-layer edition," and I am unsure if that is relevant.

In this case, when I inserted the DVD, I got the initial message. I then clicked "Open Disc" and it allowed me to save the title, as indicated in the log. Does this mean that even though I got the "Scrambled Sector" message I ultimately created a "clean" mkv?

edit: Sorry this ended-up on the Mac side, but I wanted to post under the same exact message I was getting. I run Win XP for my MakeMKV env.

The error is harmless in this case - when MakeMKV switched to direct access mode, it bypassed the operating system's block against decrypting the data. I get errors like that because my DVD drives have never had a region code selected.

If it had really been a problem, the rip would have failed.

I tried encoding this with HB, and it has problems. I did a post over at HB under the general discussion area. Basically, got frames != expected frames.

Right now, I will try to process the DVD with MakeMKV again, but this time with the TESTDUMP feature enabled. I will post back with the results.

This error is harmless in this context. And yes, if you got an MKV file then everything is fine.

Thanks for your previous response Mike.

This is a really old DVD from 2001, and I am thinking that somehow the DVD ifo is incorrect. The mkv created by MakeMKV for this DVD is invalid; the resultant mkv is longer than the movie duration by about 10s (see chapter times below). During MakeMKV processing startup, the number of cells reported as 36 is incorrect while the displayed total movie duration is short by about 20s (see 1.9.2 log below). I used mmg 7.8.0 to mux the mkv from MakeMKV before feeding to HB, but that did not help.

This DVD has only the movie and a menu; there are no other "extras." I know we can use the so-called "manual mode" now with MakeMKV, and I am wondering how I should do that since there is only title 00. I do not know enough about cell structure, etc. to go any more deeply into "manual mode" without guidance.

Please let me know if there are things I can do to get this DVD processed either using "manual mode" or otherwise. Thanks.

Hello guys!

I am a user of MakeMKV and recently acquired the MakeMKV as way to help in its development. I love this application! Always use to convert my DVDs to mkv files. I've always had success in my conversions but now I am facing a problem with the DVD 2 (the DVD 1 was converted without problems!) of the ninth Season of Grey's Anatomy (Region 4). Has appeared this message:

Is this some bug??? How do I solve this problem? I am using version 1.9.2 and Yosemite 10.10.3

OS X is preventing MakeMKV from reading parts of the disk that it needs to read to do the decode. Whether it is doing this because permissions or an actual disk problem, is difficult to tell from the error message, unfortunately. The authentication information MakeMKV tried to send was blocked, so the drive says the access is not authorized.

My previous posts/problems regarding the CR DVD of L'Avventura were solved by removing the VobSub track using mmg. Doing this fixed the "it freezes my lower-end players sometimes" problem.

Removing the VobSub DVD subtitle track also "fixed" these titles:
- Touch of Evil 1997 restored 50th anniversary DVD.
- Seven Days in May TCM DVD.
- Amelie 2002 DVD.
- 3 Days of the Condor DVD.

I muxed in SRT files in all cases, and everything was fine.
