Corrupt or invalid at offset ???

Post by stradivarius »

Hello,
When you see this, what exactly is happening? It sits there cranking away. The stop button does nothing after clicking yes. It just keeps going.
The only way is to Kill the process. This was with Gravity (2013).

Code: Select all

The source file '/BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts' is corrupt or invalid at offset 17338368, attempting to work around

Do you have debug logging turned on? If you do, there should be some additional information about the workarounds that MakeMKV is trying to do, which Mike will need.

Signature has link to FAQ on enabling debug logging, if you have not done so yet. Note that it is NOT harmful to leave it running all the time, because the log is overwritten when you start MakeMKV, but it saves a step when you DO encounter a problem.

I am running into this on several blurays as well, including Wreck it Ralph Collectors Edition, Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition and Robots. The bluray starts to process like any other and then slows to a crawl and eventually displays the message of corrupt or invalid at offset ..... and just keeps going like that. I have done 50 or so blurays, and run them all through xbmc to my Tv and all of those work great. The discs are in great condition and play fine in any player, so I am not sure how to get around this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am very new at this and this is my first post, so it is quite possible that I am doing something wrong. Thanks.

As long as the offset number increases, MakeMKV is making headway by making repeated requests to the drive to try to read the sector. It takes a while, but eventually it gets through it. Player software is programmed to ignore bad sectors, and try to continue without them, which is why a disk could "play correctly", even if there is a problem with it.

Sometimes, though, there is a defect that can't be worked around. Because of the density of the data, Bluray is much more sensitive to physical damage than DVD. And even changing drives can make a huge difference. I have one disk out of a set of ten that arrived Friday that has a scratch on it. Depending upon which of the 3 BD drives I read it in, it gets to different places in the main file before "seeing" the scratch.

This fragility is what makes it even more imperative to back up BDs while they can still be read!

I'm having this same "The source file '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB' is corrupt or invalid at offset 616448, attempting to work around" issue. I'm attempting to rip brand new "The Walking Dead" DVDs.

I attempted to attache my debug log file but received error "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."

It seems to save 1 of the titles, but for the other 3 terminates with this message:

001002:0020 LIBMKV_TRACE: Exception: Error while reading input
005003:0000 Failed to save title 2 to file P:/Media Rips/TV/Walking_Dead,_The_Season_1,_Disc_1_t02.mkv

I tried a different disc drive with the same result.

Thanks!

As mentioned above, if MakeMKV says it is attempting to work around something like that, there was no error in the reading, but the data was not what was expected. There will be debug messages saying which work arounds were attempted.

If the logs are less than 60,000 bytes, you can past it in to the message, putting "code" tags around it (see the button above the entry box when you're typing a message). Attachments haven't worked for some time here, probably because of a hosting issue.

But the fastest way to get results is to email the log and IFO files mentioned in the FAQ to support@makemkv.com

Thanks Woodstock. The log is 402kb so I will email it to the support link. I think this may be the relevant additional few lines on workarounds attempted:

The first, seemingly successful:

I have the same problem. Did anyone find a solution?

If you aren't trying to rip the same disks, you did not have the same problem - just the same error message.

Assuming the disk is not scratched and you did not get any media read errors, follow the instructions in the FAQ in my signature, and send the appropriate information to support@makemkv.com so that Mike can look at it.

I have a DVD that plays fine, I don't see any problems watching the whole way through, but has this error message. I assume this is because it is failing to read some sector. Here's my question though, if the DVD player just skips the sector and goes on, couldn't there be an option to have MakeMKV do the same thing? Ripping the DVD with one missing sector that still plays as well as the disk does on my DVD player is better than nothing. I'll take degraded quality over no rip at all.

Often asked for, but... Mike has said no.

Do you do ANY post-rip processing? That is, do you run the files through handbrake or other software, to make them smaller? "Skipping" an error will usually cause those programs to fail an encode.

There are ripping programs out there that will skip errors. Some drives will not even report an error if they can "mostly" read a sector. It MAY play just fine, or it might not - some playback software will ignore a read error from optical media, but will go bonkers if it gets invalid data, reading from a file.

My experience has been similar to Woodstock's; when I've played a rip that's corrupted it will either freeze, or, if it plays, will have some kind of spurious video "blocking" or audio noise during playback, via software player or media streaming device. Also, I believe that since I've bought and paid for a disc it should be perfect and not just playable on an off-the-shelf disc-based standalone hardware player with error correction. Therefore I will replace a disc until it can rip perfectly and play perfectly how I envision it doing so. IMNSHO.

I sometimes seem to get a burst of these errors on my external USB Libre enabled drive... and sometimes it gives up completely.

The strange thing is I think this is not an error with disc itself but some problem with drive/microcode/firmware... because I found that if I stop... unplug USB and power from drive and then re-plug in both and start again restarted MakeMKV... that the 60GB UHD disc then reads perfectly fine with NO ERRORS the next time.

This happened to me on The Walking Dead Season 10 - 6 disc set Blu Ray.

I overcame the issue by updating my LG drive to the latest firmware.
