Disc always failing at same Sector

Post by CyberAlbatross »

I have a UHD Disc that always keeps failing at the same sector with an Offset error. The drive also stops spinning at that point and seems to fail to read a specific part of the disc. I know its the same sector because after MakeMKV kept failing, I also tried DVDFab and XReveal and XReveal got stuck at the exact same sector every time. At first, i was able to play the disc fine but it had some stutter mid-movie. Than it stopped with the stutter and would straight up fail beyond a certain time code and now my Drive cant read it anymore at all. The regular HD Disc from the same Box is read just fine.

LG BU40N with 1.03 Libre Drive. I tried both with my external case and inside an actual Dell Desktop where both experienced the same issue.

Any ideas if this is my drive or the disc? Sending it back to the seller for them to "test" it would cost 7€ and if they can play it on their player, another 7€ to return the "working" disc so id like to avoid it if possible.

Title of the Movie?
Which production company made the disc"
there are lots of youtube videos that "Highlight Certain production companies that make "SubPar" discs.
Quality Control has gone down the drain.
these are "Factor's you have to look into seriously about the production companies"
take that title of the movie and search in google. see if you can see any comments in youtube about bad quality control.

Probably a combination of the BU40N sometimes struggling with harder to read discs (particularly triple layer), and the disc itself being one of those harder to read discs. The disc might not necessarily be faulty, but the data might not be the easiest to access. As Yethidran says, there are some discs which are notorious for being hard to rip e.g. Lord of the Rings Extended Editions. I have some discs that my BU40N would not manage with, but ripped fine with a Pioneer drive. The only way you will know if the disc is definitely faulty is to try it out on a different drive which is more able to cope with some of the less well authored discs. If this is not possible, you may have to pay the cost of shipping.

Did you clean the disc? If not, do so as it costs nothing and often helps resolve those errors.
Cheers :D

Cleaned both the disc and laser, still failing at same point. Sometimes the drive is struggling to detect the disc in the first place. MakeMKV usually doesnt detect it at all or gets stuck at scanning content hash table when doing a full backup

Do you think thats worth it over trying to get another copy of the disc first?

Yeah, if you can return the disc and get a replacement, it is worth a try.
Cheers :D

Is your WH16NS40 not compatible?

Does it have the MT1959 drive platform?
Is is manufactured after Oct 2015 (on the sticker on top of the drive)?
Does it say SVC NS50 on the sticker?

If the answer is yes to all 3 of the above, you can flash it for UHD compatibility.
Cheers :D

Im pretty sure it isnt because i followed the guide without looking at the manufacturing date info and now got the "not reading any discs" brick mentioned further down in the guide

yeah CyberAlbatross, sounds like that wh16ns40 was the wrong revision then... annoying (i bricked a router years back the same way, never checked the version number, bloody mistake). id have another look at the bit further down teh guide about the brick before you bin it, reckon some can be brought back.
