Hi all,
I'm looking for help diagnosing repeated read errors with an LG slim drive.
Drive info:
- Model: HL-DT-ST BD-RE BP60NB10
- Firmware shown: 1.00
- Serial: SIK06Q1974506
- MakeMKV: v1.18.3
- LibreDrive: active
- OS tested: macOS and Linux
- macOS device: /dev/rdisk13
- Linux device: /dev/sr0
- Connection: USB-C to MacBook, also tested with the dual-USB/powered cable setup to rule out power
MakeMKV reports:
Using LibreDrive mode (v06.3 id=4ACF8047C3AC)
The drive recently ripped at least one 4K UHD disc successfully, but now I'm getting repeated read errors across multiple discs, including 3D Blu-rays and a UHD disc.
Disc 1: Finding Nemo 3D Blu-ray
Correct English playlist appears to be 00800.mpls.
00800.mpls:
Segment map:
914/918,948/949,954/955,956/957,962/963
Failure:
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:INVALID FIELD IN CDB' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00948.m2ts' at offset '320550912'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk13' at offset '320550912'
Failed to save title 5
I then tried 00802.mpls because it avoids 00948/00949.
00802.mpls:
Segment map:
914/918,950/951,954/955,958/959,962/963
Failure:
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00914.m2ts' at offset '882376704'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk13' at offset '882376704'
Failed to save title 6
Earlier on the same disc I also saw:
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00914.m2ts' at offset '1635385344'
Disc 2: Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron 3D Blu-ray
Title rip failure:
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00300.m2ts' at offset '1386086400'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk13' at offset '1386086400'
Failed to save title 0
I also tried MakeMKV Backup mode on this disc.
Backup failure:
Backing up disc into folder "/Users/micahtilton/Movies/backup/MARVELS_AVENGERS_AGE_OF_ULTRON"
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00301.m2ts' at offset '64094208'
Failed to save title /BDMV/STREAM/00301.m2ts
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00300.m2ts' at offset '0'
Failed to save title /BDMV/STREAM/00300.m2ts
Encountered 1 errors of type 'Read Error'
Backup done but 2 files failed hash check
Disc 3: Different 4K UHD disc
When opening MakeMKV with a different 4K disc inserted, I saw:
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BP60NB10 1.00 SIK06Q1974506' at offset '655360'
udf: UDF mount: disc not properly formatted or damaged disc (rootdirs failing)
Error 'Scsi error - NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROCESS OF BECOMING READY' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BP60NB10 1.00 SIK06Q1974506' at offset '32768'
Disc 4: Marvel's Avengers: Endgame 4K UHD on Linux
Saving to /mnt/storage/media
Failure:
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:INVALID FIELD IN CDB' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00055.m2ts' at offset '6712197120'
Error 'Posix error - Remote I/O error' occurred while reading '/dev/sr0' at offset '6712197120'
LIBMKV_TRACE: Exception: Error in p->FetchFrames(1,false)
Failed to save title 0
Things I have tried:
- Cleaned the discs carefully
- Tried multiple discs
- Tried different full-length playlists on Finding Nemo 3D
- Tried MakeMKV Backup mode instead of direct MKV rip
- Tried macOS and Linux
- Tried different USB cabling / dual-USB power setup
- Increased read retry count
- Let the drive retry, but it fails repeatedly
macOS also showed low-level disk errors for the drive:
disk13: I/O error
ioreg showed read errors during one session:
Errors (Read)=12
Later another session showed:
Errors (Read)=6
Question:
Does this look like a weak/defective BP60NB10 drive or optical pickup, a firmware issue, or something specific to this drive model with BD-50 / 3D discs?
Since backup mode also fails on raw M2TS reads, including one failure at offset 0, I'm leaning toward hardware/drive read instability rather than a playlist or MakeMKV 3D issue. Is there anything else I should test before replacing the drive?
Thanks.
