Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
Sorry, but i didn't read all the post and at first sight I doesn't see the answer at my problem.
So.
I use this tool to make backups from my DVD-s ans BR-s. Its working perfect with BluRay discs.
In a case of a DVD it makes correctly the mkv file, but with 4:3 aspect ratio.
If I look the original VOB files with my WD TV Live, I use the widescreen mode to my 16:9 TV.
But if I convert these files to mkv, I must to switch the WD TV to normal mode to stretch the movie to its original size.
It is an error of the converting process or the WD TV's mistake with mkv? But why working pretty good with BR rips?

makemkv doesn't alter the info from the disc. are you sure your dvd's are in 16:9 format? many dvd's are in full screen (4:3) aspect ratio. usually it says if it's widescreen or full screen on the disc and on the case.
Re: Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
It's look like a wide screen movie... Horizontally fills the entire screen.
After converting it's look like a 4:3 movie, but in the picture there is the full information.
This is the opposite case of viewing old 4:3 movie on new 16:9 screen...

I've not had this issue before. Where are you from? Can you give me an example of a disc that this happens with?

I tried it with some old discs and there is no such problem...
Then it must be a disc specific error?

Possibly. Which discs are you having the issue with and how did you arrive to the conclusion that they were 16:9 and not 4:3?Tomka wrote:I tried it with some old discs and there is no such problem...

You have right!
In the downloaded mediainfo app show this information: 720:576 in 4:3 format.
Can I somehow change this setting in the mkv?

Re: Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
the beauty of makemkv is that it does not alter the content it rips. this is why it was fairly obvious they were not 16:9 discs.

Re: Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
Yes thats the movie.
I read after, this is the anamorphic widescreen...
But the WD TV can' t recognize this , so it plays it as a standard 4:3 ....

For what: the DVD's VOB files, MakeMKV's output, or both?Tomka wrote:In the downloaded mediainfo app show this information: 720:576 in 4:3 format.
Re: Aspect ratio error with WD TV Live (only DVD)
For the mkv it is sure:
Track information
Type: Video
Codec: Mpeg2
Resolution: 720x576
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Frame rate: 25
At the weekend i don't have the DVD with me, but if i got back i will looking it one more...
But don't think it will be different to the mkv file...

Then you'd better not buy your discs in Hungary and order from abroad.Tomka wrote:But don't think it will be different to the mkv file...
Limitless is 2.40:1, so if the disc you have is indeed encoded in 4:3, then out of the 576 pixels of vertical resolution, a whopping 256 pixels (44.4%) is used for letterboxing (black bars at the top and bottom), leaving you with only 320 pixels of actual vertical resolution (instead of 150 pixels of letterboxing and 426 pixels of content if it were encoded in 16:9).
Unless of course they used Pan & Scan, in which case you're just not seeing the whole movie.

Hi!
Although it's about standalone players, I believe the following thread from the Doom9 Forum may provide you with the insight you're seeking:
