Dirty Dancing 20th Anniv - won't recognize. DVDfab works fine

Post by elCheapoDeluxe »

I've ripped hundreds of my discs and never come across this problem. I have a paid registration and I'm on 1.17.3. I am used to the usual SCSI errors indicating damaged media and such. What I have is the BD for "Dirty Dancing 20th anniversary edition". This disc and only this disc locks up MakeMKV before I can even click the button to begin opening the disc. Here is what I do know:
  • Disc looks pristine. I have tried cleaning it with a microfiber cloth. I realize this doesn't always mean anything.
  • Disc plays fine on my Panasonic UBP-820 and Yamaha BD-A1060 blu ray players
  • When MakeMKV tries to open the disc it does not fail at the point where you click the "open disc" button. It fails before it gets to that.
  • MakeMKV doesn't appear to hard lock up - but it doesn't progress. It doesn't ever get to the open disc button.
  • Windows shows the volume name
  • MakeMKV won't ever get past the scanning your drives step if the disc is in the drive before starting MakeMKV
  • There isn't a lot of grinding and seeking. Just a quick, light seek and then no disc activity
  • Nothing shows in the log area because the failure is BEFORE you get to the open disc button - so no scsi errors I can report
  • The CPU is working hard in MakeMKV for both the GUI and the console app. An aside - I always run MakeMKV without the service - I change my shortcut to run MakeMKV as an administrator
  • If you close MakeMKV then you have to go to the task manager and close the console task because it is hung
  • Disc will not open on MakeMKV on three separate computers running Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2019.
  • Disc will not open in MakeMKV with four separate drives: LG WH16NS60, Asus BW-16D1HT, Pioneer BDR-XD05, and a Buffalo BRXL-PC6U2B
  • Symptoms are absolutely identical for every drive and every computer and windows version I have tried.
  • Rebooting computers doesn't help
  • All other discs continue to open fine
  • DVDfab 12 did an export to MKV fine. No read errors
  • DVDfab 12 did an export to ISO just fine, and MakeMKV worked fine on the ISO

With debug mode enabled here was my output:

I'm obviously set with my rip - but if there is anything I can do to resolve a bug for the community let me know.

Have you ever determined a cause? I am experiencing the same symptoms!!! Thanks for the nod to DVDfab 'cuz without it I'd be stuck not being able to rip this silly disc! Still need to verify that the file is usable, but at least it didn't completely hang the drive!
