What can I do to successfully rip the rest of the dvd's ? I have tried 3 different dvd sets now and its the same every time. Other dvd and blu ray work.

It looks like the disc might be dirty or otherwise hard to read and the drive seems to try really hard to read it. Eventually the OS decides the drive doesn't exist anymore.

Code: Select all

Error 'OS error - (ipc/send) invalid destination port' occurred while reading 'BD-RE ASMedia ASM105x 1.01' at offset '12189696'
Error 'Posix error - Device not configured' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk5' at offset '12189696'
That's usually what messages like the above mean.

I assume your drive is connected via USB? Sometimes, if the drive is powered by USB (meaning it doesn't have a separate power supply), the drive can try to use more power than the USB port can supply. When this happens, the USB drive shuts down (briefly) and the OS reports the drive has disappeared. The most often happens with either the drive is trying to read data too fast or when the drive is trying very hard to read a dirty spot on the disc.

Is the drive powered by USB? If so, is it connected via a single USB cable? Lots of times there's a 'Y' cable so the drive can be connected via two USB ports with the second plug providing extra power. Is it connected to an unpowered USB hub, a powered USB hub or directly to your computer?

Finally, I've learned that some discs just don't like some drives for reasons I can't explain. I've amassed a collection of 3 different optical drives and almost always if a disc gives me trouble in my 'main' drive, I find it works in one of the other drives. (Not always, of course, but often enough).

See this thread. I can only get a few episodes from Season 8 and 9. 1 to 7 were fine as were 10 and 11. Tried a few different drives but it seems something to so with the discs themselves

Which edition of the complete series did you get? I know from recent experience that the edition can make the difference. The Mill Creek version (and the least expensive) is most likely cheaper due to most likely known issue with manufacture.

I have experienced something similar when it came to buying newer editions of TV series with companies attempting to capitalize on nostalgia. This happened to me with Battlestar Galactica, He-Man, and The Pretender. I ended up returning the He-man that I purchased from Best Buy due to bad manufacture and finding one of the first releases of the entire collection of Battlestar Galactica as well.
