Rip errors UHD disks

I'm in a similar boat...

I have the BD box set of HBO's The Wire and Episode 10 of Season 4 consistently fails to rip with read errors. I have tried cleaning the disc. MakeMKV gives me the following link: http://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/ - which eventually led me to this thread.

I was able to copy the entire disc to my hard drive using Windows Explorer and then I created the discatt.dat file which allowed MakeMKV to open the disc contents from my hard drive.

I then created the mkv of the offending episode however on checking the file in VLC, I find that the sound stops working at the exact same point each time.

Any suggestions please? I cannot return the box set and I really don't want to have to buy another version for one episode.

EDIT: The disc will play in my Denon DBT-3313 player, although there is a momentary glitch in the sound where the rip stops playing the sound. VLC will also play the disc with the same result as the Denon. I realise that a player playing the disc is no guarantee that the disc can be ripped.

MakeMKV cannot work around your drive being unable to read a disk.

You say you've already cleaned the disk, which is the first step in getting it to work; did you use the cleaning method linked to in If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!, in the post by Lovely Rita? There is a difference between "shiny clean like new" and "shiny clean as far as the laser is concerned".

I have seen that post and article. I have tried a moist, lint-free cleaning cloth and then tried some lens cleaner. I guess the iso-what-not alcohol is next to try.

Well, various cleaning attempts have not worked so I tried cross-flashing my drive and that didn't help. Eventually though, since the sound was the issue, I deselected the DTS HD MA track and just ripped the core DTS track with the video and that was successful. Good enough on this occasion.
